I think mainstream fashion peaked in the 50s and 60s if you consider good taste, practicality and individuality (without going overboard). If you looked at a crowd, they would actually look like they matched the city they lived in. Then there's today. Imagine a crowd of tourists walking through an old neighbourhood. Yes, just it looks weird with casual clothes because nobody ever wore fedoras with jeans and a t shirt, also hats these days are mostly made to one size. Every face is different and you person A would need a different brim size and crown height compared to person B because their facial structure is different. This is hard to find except for a few specialised hat shops these days and these ones are always expensive because they appeal to a niche customer and usually make their products from superior material and construction (made in Britain with rabbit fur as opposed to wool made in Bangladesh) so for most people today it's hard to pull off a hat because they don't have the right shape for their face, the affordable ones are cheap crappy looking materials and they don't wear clothes that suit the hat.
