From the Founding Fathers right down to Ronald Reagan's triumphant victory in 1980, the liberty of the individual has been a cherished ideal in American society. I fear that we are losing this ideal.
I understand the streak of authoritarianism in the Trump phenomenon. The argument goes: The communists, the Jews, the liberal intellectuals, the Elites are all trying to take away our power and freedom - isn't it only right that we restrict theirs? They used the freedom they didn't deserve to corrupt and weaken our society - shouldn't we stop them from abusing it?
Understandable, but the Alt-Right is going beyond this - they are attacking the freedom of fellow conservatives to disagree with them. People with differing viewpoints aren't just that, they become enemies. Traitors, even. The new American laager doesn't abide diversity of opinion.
It's sadly inevitable perhaps that with white men feeling increasingly threatened that survival is starting to well, trump ideals. But let's just spare a moment to think about what we may be losing.
Trump is a man who believes in restricting the press, in controlling the internet, in forcing Apple to give up data on individuals to the Federal Government. Many of his supporters don't just want to expel illegal aliens, they want to ultimately use all the powers the federal government has amassed over the past decades for their own purposes. They want big government rightism in place of leftism.
It would be terribly sad if it was conservative American white men who give Liberty the death-blow while trying to save the country, rather than its outright enemies.

The internet itself killed liberty as we know it forever. Unabomber was right. Ever since technology advanced to this point of dependency and connectedness true individuality completely died. Ironically, censoring or just outright restricting internet access entirely might have given us MORE individual liberty, freedom from the tyranny of the masses on social media, and the media/tech companies enslaving us with entertainment while mining our data and violating our privacy anyway.
This is why I find the whole modern internet "freedom" movement to be a farce.
If you really cared for your privacy online you would completely boycott all mainstream sites, even this place since it uses Google analytics. But no, clearly these "internet freedom" fighters only value the freedom of convenience, the freedom of pornography, the freedom to be distracted.
