We did lose those wars, but not because of OP's reasoning. Afghanistan was lost because we ignored it to invade Iraq in 2003. Iraq 2 was lost because Iraq is an ungovernable mess and our strategy was retarded.
Most people don't think we lost Desert Storm because we defeated Saddam's army. However aside from getting Iraq out of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia we didn't accomplish much. Schwartzkopf negotiated the peace treaty himself and had all the leverage to extract anything we wanted. He gave Saddam a no-fly-zone that let helicopters fly. Those helicopters massacred the Shia uprising we encouraged. We have had a military presence there ever since.
