Its possible Trump made a deal but I think its more likely Ryan simply submitted considering Ryan's middle name is "submission" as speaker of the house.
He rarely has a spine to speak of and he pretty much lies down and takes whatever Obama gives him, but now the fire is under his ass to be a leader in the party or get out. Ryan is fairly young and he still has a promising future ahead of him, he doesn't need any more negativity press from advocates of the party who have already gotten behind Trump.

Anyone who thought the Republicans wouldn't align behind whatever eventual nominee to present a "united" front for the general election is either an idiot or so young that this is only their first or second election. This happens every fucking time. If Michelle Obama ran on the Republican ticket and somehow won, Ryan and Christie and the ghost of Reagan would come out to endorse her. The same shit's going to happen with all the butt-blasted Bernie supporters when Hillary gets the nomination; Bernie will come out and say "okay well we put up a great fight but it's time for everyone who supported me to vote Hillary".
As much as parties or their constituents might hate individual candidates, they have no desire to lose to the other party yet again. Even an "outsider" who doesn't play by their rules will have to get in line when the election is over, and Trump himself is becoming increasingly more moderate and PC, tailoring his act, just as predicted and even outright stated by Manafort.
Cruz, who's hated among Republicans even more than Trump, would have "united" the party in the same way. Politicians will say whatever the fuck they have to in order to keep going. If that means endorsing a chucklefuck you'd wish would jump off a bridge, they will.
