The problem is not capitalism. The patent on the drug that he raised the price on is expired. The formula is also in public circulation. FDA regulations make it so that if anyone wanted to compete they would have to sit through 3 to 6 years of approval. Once you get approved he can drop the price down to nothing and turn your investment into shit. The whole problem is the barrier to entry imposed by the FDA that protects his pricing.

>>
>>75822873
There isn't a problem. If it is too expensive he won't be in business anymore. If there is no competition, you can chalk that up the the fact that the government interferes by giving money to certain companies to fund the drugs.

In a healthy market you simply can't just raise the price of a product by that margin and still have business. Something is wrong here.
>>
>>75823253
Everyone in this thread is a damn retard. Skreli stated, in a reddit comment, that as a result of raising the price, he would another company would start making it, which would activate capitalist competition and lower the price of the drug.

The drug doesn't do anything to HIV. It treats a very rare symptom of HIV that only affects a very small minrity of people.

Hearing "5000% price increase" sounds like a lot but every other treatment for rare diseases STILL costs more. Because this specific drug is something you take a small amount of for a short period of time and then boom you're done. It isn't like other rare disease treatments that last your whole life.
>>
>>75824874
So who's at fault, the liver or the alcoholic?

Think very carefully.

Pregnant women aren't more likely to get a toxoplasmosis infection than the general population, but should they get it for the first time while pregnant such that they do not yet have antibodies against it, it will be passed on to the fetus.

Lots of people have Toxoplasmosis. It doesn't do anything unless you are immunodeficient though.

>In a healthy market you simply can't just raise the price of a product by that margin and still have business. Something is wrong here.

There's a startup time for competitors. In the short term, before others begin to produce, you can make a tidy profit.

Also, this character is a small fry. Valeant has been using the same strategy for years, and has made billions. They've only fairly recently
been exposed.

And one more pharmaceutical trick: Drug producers were paying generic competitors not to produce. Which is effectively price-fixing. It is absolutely anti-competitive. I think Congress has finally gotten around to looking at this.

Get government sanctioned rent seekers and protected monopolies out of the way. If it didn't take 4 years and millions of dollars for the FDA to approve the manufacture of a 50 year old drug by a new company, this douchebag wouldn't be able to raise prices so drastically. The problem in this instance is that the market is *not* free.
>>
>>75826183
Agreed The whole price fixing thing is a massive fucking problem with companies like that that have a long start up time and high upfront cost. I'ts one of the reason lolspergtarians can never have the perfect capitalist system. Unless everyone starts from the same point, people will make more money being paid NOT to become competition than to actually become competition. Monopolies are too easy to form without regulation. Government should be the shield of the people, wielded by the people. not what we have now.

I wasn't aware of this Valeant strategy. I do hope it is sorted out.

>There's a startup time for competitors. In the short term, before others begin to produce, you can make a tidy profit.

This is true, however capitalism has always had a shitty time starting up. At the beginning of the industrial revolution, pretty much everyone had a shity time. Once competition does start, however, ideally it will stay. The problem is the whole "ideally" part. Not everything is ideal.

I'm gonna be honest here, people with good judgement singular sexual partners aren't really affected.

As for pregnant women or cat owners that have toxoplasmosis, well cats are bad pets and a decision a cat owner made. Pregnant women and their families should have saved money for any complications life might throw their way before deciding to give birth.

This is capitalism, plain and simple.

I will say though, I personally don't agree with the ability to patent FDA approved drugs.

When people say 'capitalism', what they're contrasting it against is really slightly-more regulated capitalism, not fucking communism. After his little stunt with Daraprim, a competitor released a basically identical alternative (same active ingredient pyrimethamine but also had something else in it to help counteract one of the side effects I think) for $1/pill. The original drug was like $12/pill.

Capitalism seems to be working just fine, not sure what problem you're complaining about.

That's why before we started regulating the market in our country workers were getting their hands chopped off in the factories and there was rat shit in all the meat, right? Why monopolies were rampant? That's why the Chilean monetarist experiment was an abject failure until the government started taking a hand in managing the economy again in '82? That's why Russia's shock therapy transition to capitalism in the 90s failed absolutely disastrously? That's why all of the most successful economies in the world are regulated capitalist ones?

Communism is always a disaster. Pure laissez-faire capitalism isn't as bad a disaster as communism, but it's not great. Reasonably -- not excessively -- regulated capitalism is simply the best-performing economic system we've got.
