We don't really vote for shit. EVERY prime minister in Canadian history has won without a majority of votes.
How it works: prime minister is the leader of the party with the most seats (note seats not votes)
So in a single riding he doesn't have to get a majority of votes he just needs to get 1 more vote than the second closest party from that riding
So basically this translates to winning with a majority of seats but only 20-38% of the popular vote
Winning elections here is all about who has the money and connections to split votes and gerrymander the ridings. Trudeau doesn't represent what the majority of Canadians want or think he only represents the elites who basically placed him in power
Another minor fault can be placed with the conservatives because many voted for "anyone but Harper" Harper needed to have stepped down as conservative leader and let someone else run while they still had a chance of winning the election. We would greatly benefit from a US style term limit where nobody can be elected prime minister more than twice
