For all things Christian

Catholics and Protestants alike are welcome to discuss theology. Try to be polite.

Atheists also welcome, but try to be constructive.

God created the world
The world we have around us is the greatest evidence we have of God's creation.

And what do we see in the world around us? We see millions of creatures dying in horrific pain. We see the strong devour the weak. We see the female attracted to the alpha like a moth drawn to a flame. This world we live in is not a picnic, it's a bloody slaughterhouse where only the strong, the quick, and the intelligent make it out alive.

God loves the powerful lion who kills his pack leader to take his rightful place as ruler of the pride. God loves the spider who outwits the moth, and rightfully devours it alive. God loves the strong, the powerful, the majestic.

People who fight and win. People who crush their enemies. People who survive against the odds. People who make their way in the world with the power of their own two hands. There's nothing God likes seeing more than a perfect creature in full possession of his powers rising to meet their potential.

The Bible is the work of Man, the world around us is the work of God. True heavenly inspiration is drawn from evidence, science, logic and reason. If the Bible contradicts the world, then the Bible contradicts God.
God would not give you the ultimate gifts of logic and reason if He didn't want you to use them. He would not construct some elaborate video game where you must arbitrarily reject the evidence you see before your eyes as a prerequisite to enter Heaven.

The lacking or lack of sources is part of the problem. More importantly it's ran and meant to be fundamentalist Evangelical writing. The arguments are generally conjecture-driven or poorly thought out.

>>75794711
>Seems like a copout.
Not at all. It's recommended to respect and listen to the educated one in charge in the office of St. Peter but in no way is his common dialogues doctrinal in themselves. I'm speaking of doctrine as it exists. While there is a big pressure to listen to the man, it is well understood that his words are still fallible until he exercises the powers of his office.

A pope is there for the same reason Peter is there: To help lead and guide the church into the future. Unless they espouse doctrine, they are speaking from the position of an educated priest and an educated priest can give guidance but at the same time can still falter. It would be strange to expect sainthood gifted to a man in the office originated by a man of great struggles to begin with.

Now I can't say what good there is in Francis besides that he is a proper Catholic and uses Catholic Moral Teaching to an extent I'd disagree with but I'd see no reason to dismiss the post-V.2 papacy with Pope Benedict XVI and John Paul II before him.

I like to describe it this way. Christiainity is the history of an eternal and ever-renewing covenant with God. That is not only true collectively but also individually. A covenant involves two parties. You are one of them, and are supposed to renew that covenant every moment of it through your thoughts (faith) and interaction with the world (works)., until the moment you die.

Jesus referred to Simon as "kepha", which in Aramaic means "rock", it is indisputable and confirmed in John 1:42
In koine Greek, unlike Attic Greek, there is no distinction between petra (a feminine noun) and Petros (masculine ending). "Petros" is merely the masculine neologism created by Our Lord for Simon. Our Lord was making a pun. Would you have had Jesus name Peter "Petra" or "Petrina"? If Our Lord wanted to make the distinction you protestants imply, He would have used the word "lithos", which in koine Greek means "little rock" or "pebble". The conferral of "the keys" and "the binding and loosing" passages have antecedents in the Jewish Scriptures (see: Isaiah 22) for the notions of bestowing authority and judgement over the community, stewardship. See also John 21:16-17. Here is confirmed the above passages by the clear establishment of Peter as the Shepherd of the flock.

To the masses, Jesus spoke in parables, but to His disciples, he spoke plainly (Mark 4:11, Luke 8:10). Jesus had no qualms about identifying Himself in plain Aramaic: "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except tyhrough me" (John 14:6); "Today, this scripture (Isaiah) is fulfilled in your hearing" (Luke 4:21); "I AM" (John 18:5-8); "It is He who is speaking to you" (John 4:25-26) . So, why would He be so coy and convoluted in His speech and logic when speaking with the twelve? He Himself said "let your yes mean yes and your no, no" (Matthew 5:37) Why mention rock twice in the same sentence unless it refers to the same thing? Why rename Peter at all if it had no meaning? Who did Paul go to (Galatians 1:18)??? To Peter.

Nonsense. Everyone is an eternal being, and eternal life happens at the instant of salvation when the Holy Spirit enters into you and resurrects you unto eternal life.

I have read chunks of his writings but I'm not expert on the guy. From my understanding, much of what he's praised for and known for is seen in the pope before him (Benedict XVI) but Francis just puts in the forefront of his dialogue so he gets taken as a liberal reformer.

For example, he wrote a missal On the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons, in which he said "It is deplorable that homosexual persons have been and are the object of violent malice in speech or in action. Such treatment deserves condemnation from the Church's pastors wherever it occurs." That letter got a bad rep, though, because he spent so much time talking about how homosexuality is a strong inclination towards sin. Here's the thing, though: to a Catholic theologian, everyone is strongly inclined towards sin.

And even his anti-captialistic dialogue is visible within the writings of Pope John Paul II and longstanding in Catholic Moral Teaching. The only difference being that JP2 focuses on the Catholic complaints of Marxism first and foremost while Francis is focusing on the complaints towards capitalist systems in relation to the moral law.

Now I respect Pope Francis as a Jesuit who lives by his vows and I respect those vows tremendously and his ecclesiastical reforms but most views unique to him I tend to have problems with. This has little to do with doctrine but rather understanding the facts of the situation that he applies doctrine to.

For example I tend to be annoyed with how he wishes to promote the common welfare of people in society when supporting pro-immigration and focuses on the benefits of a culture of encounter but says next to nothing of the shift in cultural values in society that comes alongside it. He's supporting the common good when it comes to basic needs but forgets it when it comes to the moral good in society nor says not a thing on cohesion.

The Jews in charge of Jerusalem rejected Jesus' claim to be the Messiah. They had developed a system of rules in captivity designed to never allow them to break the Law of Moses, which is why they were in captivity.

By their rules, they became very religious. But they had no heart for God, and they not only could not tell that it was their God standing before them, but that they wanted Him dead.

In response, Jesus told them that they were not the children of Abraham, as they claimed via genetics. They were instead children of the god of this world, the devil. Jesus called them a nest of vipers, and the synagogue of Satan, because they refused to believe He was God.

The person lying to you is lost and does not believe the bible is the Word of God. In the bible, in future prophecy, there will be 12,000 young virgin men of 12 tribes who will preach the gospel during the Troubles of Jacob. These 144,000 young Hebrew men of these 12 tribes prove that there are at least 144,000 young Hebrew men of these 12 tribes.

Abraham, the father of faith, left Ur of the Chaldeas when God asked him to. He left the Canaanites, left their evil ways, and left the practice of magic and demonology. God separated him out of the Canaanites, and blessed Abraham through his son.

Abraham though his son Ishmael is the father of many Arab nations, none of which were blessed by God.

Abraham through the son of faith, Isaac, and his son, Jacob/Israel, blessed the world through the production of the Savior, Christ Jesus.

Anyone who says there are no Jews today takes words out of the book of Revelation, and anyone who takes words out of the book of Revelation is accursed.

In contrast to this, in paragraph #2 at the beginning of this article, the Roman Catholic Church says that the rock cannot refer to Jesus "but only Peter--as is so much more apparent in Aramaic in which the same word (Kipha) is used for 'Peter' and 'rock.'" The problem is that the text is not in Aramaic but Greek. Since we do not have the Aramaic text, it is not proper to refer to it as proof of the Roman Catholic position. We have to ask ourselves why the Roman Catholic Church would resort to using something that we don't have: the Aramaic text. Is it because their argument is not supported by the Greek and so they must infer something from a text we don't possess?

Furthermore, in John 1:42 it says, "He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas," (which is translated Peter)." The word "Peter" here is petros--not petra. It is used to elucidate the Aramaic kephas which is not a name in Aramaic.

"Except in Jn. 1:42, where it is used to elucidate Aramaic kēphás, Pétros is used in the NT only as a name for Simon Peter . . . The translation supports the view that Kēphás is not a proper name, since one does not usually translate proper names."

we refer to the Aramaic because that is the language Jesus used irl when he said that sentence. Or do you think Jesus spoke to them in koinè Greek? lmao
>The translation supports the view that Kēphás is not a proper name, since one does not usually translate proper names."
In fact it is a name given to Peter specifically in virtue of his mission. When God changes someone's name, it has a profound meaning and is a reference to what God wants for them.
>The word "Peter" here is petros--not petra
Again, the difference here is made only to avoid giving to Peter a feminine name. In English you don't have gendered nouns, so I hope that is why you have so much trouble understanding. Jesus could not call him "petra" because that would have been like calling him "jasmine": It would be quite embarassing then for him to be called "jasmine"(i.e. petra) all his life.

There's a hobo camped outside my apartment building and he's literally there every day. Has been for over a year since I've moved in.

I know the Lord says to be charitable and I agree, I've given him change before but I saw him one day pulling out a smartphone and typing away on it; in full hobo gear and he was using a smartphone like it was no big deal. Coupled with the fact that he's been there for months without moving or doing anything else but beg in the same spot for over a year, I can't help but wonder what to do.

Part of me doubts he actually is homeless since he can afford a smartphone with a plan, but at the same time the bible tells me to give alms and be charitable. Should I help him at all? Or is he just looking to take advantage of the people on my neighborhood? Curious to see what my fellow Catholics and Christians would do in this situation; should I help someone who doesn't seem to be in need?

(RNS) Jesuits are bound by oath not to seek higher office in the Roman Catholic Church, and now one of them has been elected to its highest office: Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, Pontifex Maximus.

Pope Francis, the first Jesuit to become pope, not only represents a paradox for the papacy, but also the larger history of the Society of Jesus, as the Jesuits are formally known.

“On the one hand, Jesuits aren’t supposed to be in positions of authority,” said the Rev. Joseph Fessio, a Jesuit and founder of Ignatius Press. “On the other hand, they’re supposed to be obedient to the church.”

>Gee, what's a black pope supposed to do.

Yes, Jesus holds a piece of bread and says that the bread is His body. Obvious symbolism.

Peter had already been called Caephus by this time, and no, Jesus did not build any church on Peter. That you belong to the Church of Peter is your fault, not Jesus'.

Jesus never once called Mary His mother in the bible.

Remember the bible?

I'm an atheistfriend, but I really like the Bible. It's pretty nice in both a literary and moral/spiritual kind of way. I've read a lot of good excerpts over the years. Yesterday I was thinking that I should just try to read it from cover to cover, one chapter a day. Then I realized how ridiculously long it is. A chapter a day would take a few years. Is there like a guide for like, "the best of" the Bible? Or like, could you tell me which chapters/books are worthy of skipping? I know a lot of material is repeated throughout that can probably be skipped. If anyone knows a good "reading guide" to the Bible I'd appreciate it. Thanks senpaitachi.

Alternate spelling is alternate.

John 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).

Beginning of ministry, not the same day Jesus called Peter "Satan".

Jesuit priests are explicitly discouraged from becoming bishops, much less pope, and that outsider's sensibility helps to explain Francis' almost breezy willingness to dispense with centuries of closely guarded and cherished tradition.

"We never imagined that a Jesuit could become pope. It was an impossible thing," said Fr. Antonio Spadaro, a Jesuit who conducted a book-length interview with the pope and knows him well. "It sent me into a crisis, in a sense, when he was elected. We Jesuits are supposed to be at the service of the pope, not to be a pope."

Other way around. Jesuit with a merchant mask.

"I furthermore promise and declare that I will, when opportunity present, make and wage relentless war, secretly or openly, against all heretics, Protestants and Liberals, as I am directed to do, to extirpate and exterminate them from the face of the whole earth; and that I will spare neither age, sex or condition; and that I will hang, waste, boil, flay, strangle and bury alive these infamous heretics, rip up the stomachs and wombs of their women and crush their infants' heads against the walls, in order to annihilate forever their execrable race. That when the same cannot be done openly, I will secretly use the poisoned cup, the strangulating cord, the steel of the poniard or the leaden bullet, regardless of the honor, rank, dignity, or authority of the person or persons, whatever may be their condition in life, either public or private, as I at any time may be directed so to do by any agent of the Pope or Superior of the Brotherhood of the Holy Faith, of the Society of Jesus."

The Society of Jesus was thenceforth recognized as the chief opposing force of Protestantism. The Order became dominant in determining the plans and policy of the Rowish Church. The brotherhood grew and flourished. It planted its chapters first in France, Italy and Spain, and then in all civilized lands.

The success of the Order was phenomenal. It became a power in the world. It sent out its representatives to every quarter of the globe. Its solitary apostles were seen shadowing the thrones of Europe. They sought, by every means known to human ingenuity, to establish and confirm the tottering fabric of Rome, and to undermine the rising fabric of Protestantism.

They penetrated to the Indus and the Ganges. They traversed the deserts of Tibet, and said, “Here am I,” in the streets of Peking. They looked down into the silver mines of Peru, and knelt in prayer on the shores of Lake Superior. To know all secrets, fathom all design, penetrate all intrigues, prevail in all counsels, rise above all diplomacy, and master the human race, — such was their purpose and ambition.

They wound about human society in every part of the habitable earth, the noiseless creepers of their ever-growing plot to retake the world for the Church, and to subdue and conquer and extinguish the last remnant of opposition to her dominion from shore to shore, from the rivers to the ends of the earth.

[Ridpath’s Universal History, John Clarke Ridpath, 1899]

Questions for Christians of /pol/:

>What do you think life after death is like exactly? Also do you think it will be on Heaven or Earth?

>Do you think the next life will be never ending, or will it too eventually end?

>Will you have free will in the next life or will the worship of God be fearful similar to slavery?

>Do you think God will end one day or will he always exist?

>Do you think God has the potential to get bored with us and eventually return us to nothing or send us to a terrifyingly unimaginable existence?

And to lighten up the mood:

>Do you think all otaku are going to hell?
>>
>>75808215
>yes after Judgement a new earth will be made, kingdom of God.

Free will isn't really a biblical doctrine, your either a slave to sin or to Christ

God is eternal so he can't die, nor can he lie, so he can't just throw us away
