I'm not claiming to be an expert on the subject but I can speak a little bit from personal experience. I don't believe that "magic" exists in the Harry Potter sense, or in the sense that there are some vague "magical energies" in the world, magic exists like it does for clerics in D&D, essentially meaning all real magic is invocations and rituals to seek the intervention of tangible higher (or lower) beings.
When people pray to God they are essentially using magic. I believe that the being that is invoked receives some kind of power or energy from the invocation/prayer, and they usually have some kind of agenda on Earth. A being might find a girl particularly alluring and favor her in some way, he might favor a man for his intelligence or heroism, or he might favor someone simply because they are powerful on earth and able to do his bidding in some way.
"The rich get richer", power on earth creates influence with higher beings which will give more power to the powerful. This is linked to idolatry. An "idol" will give some kind of power to some kind of being through a transference of the emotional energy that people feel towards that person.
"Hero" was essentially an Ancient Greek word for "Idol", and hero worship was a type of Idolatry.
