I work graveyards, and I constantly approach vehicles on routine traffic stops with my weapon held down by my side whenever I feel uneasy about a stop. The same thing goes with responding to (some) domestics, 911 hang ups, shots fired calls, open doors, and fights with reported weapons.
90% of the time it's nothing, and nothing prevents me from moving down the force continuum by holstering my SIG.
But like the majority of these guys are saying- action is always faster than reaction. The most adverse action I would incur would be a verbal complaint by whomever I am confronting on said call/traffic stop.
