Trump doesn't have to compete for attention with 16 other candidates right now. Personally, I think it (the motivations behind it, really) is what lost him the election. He cared too much about the "brown vote" that is practically useless to Republicans, and neglected the white vote.
If he had increased his white vote by <5% he would have won regardless of how many minority votes he received. But whites didn't care enough about Romney.
