Our best bet is to try to show them we are an intelligent species as well, however primitive we seem, and hope they contacted a western world first, and not some shithole like Ethiopia or Abbos in australia.
Things we would need to do:
1. Show we have a number system. Just put rocks down in a pile of 1, then 2, then 3, etc...
2. Show basic universal concepts to prove our intelligence. Mathematical ones would work best, such as the Pythagorean theorum. Draw a right triangle with tally marks marking III and IIII on the sides, and IIIII on the hypotenuse. They may not know who Pythagoras is, but they will sure as fuck know his theorem to be true.
3. Try your best to show we have an alphabet, a written language and a numerical system.
4. Show that we are interested in intersteller travel. Draw a rough solar system, large circle with 8 (or 9 if pluto) circles in a line out from that. Signify that we are the third one, showing we are aware we are the third rock from the sun. This will help the aliens to know that at the very least we are worth sparing as intelligent slaves.
They won't know who Newton is, but they'll know what gravity is and the conservation of mass/energy. They won't know who Einstein was, but they'll know relativity. They won't know who Darwin is, but they'll know about natural selection.
If you are the first contact, don't fuck it up and try to show them your anime collection or snapchat it. You would be the world's ambassador.
