This "religious liberty" is actually the right to be whatever type of Christian you want if you stay separate from the other types., e.g, Quakers in PA, Catholics in MD, Puritans in MA.

To be honest, Christianity has done more to keep this country true and conservative more than anything else. The problem is when it began to seep from personal morality and into legislation.

Most people in the US are Christians. It dates back to the Christian/Roman conquest of Europe. I think monotheism proved more useful for social control and cohesion because polytheism is much more folkloric and local. "There is one god everyone believes in (or gets killed)" is a lot more uniting than "I believe in my local lake god and you believer in your local river god but we believe in a bunch of the same gods too - those guys across the ocean believe in slightly different gods."
