Mostly, socialism is a failed social theory due to its ridiculous requirements: it requires man to change radically."In theory" it works, but there is always going to be corrupt people preventing it from actually working. If a system only works "in theory", it just plain doesn't work. A system for humans to live in can't be based on superhuman morals.
Secondly, socialism is about giving everybody the same. This is a stifling of man's innate drive to excellence and development, as it negates positive outcomes from actually doing so (beyond ideological praise) and it praises no attempts being done by remunerating the non-innovators in the same way as the innovators. Motivation is struck down when you go through loops and obstacles, only to receive a pat on the back and a medal.
There are a number of other issues, but I'm pretty tired and I have to get ready for an exam, so I'll let somebody else take care of this.
I'll explain it in an example that is easy to grasp, even to those who believe and perform liberal math.
A professor carried out an experiment with his student on tests. he told them that every student would have his grade averaged to the class mean, instead of being graded individually.
The first test came around, and everyone got a B. The students who didn't study at all were happy, but the students who studied hard were not.
As the second test came around, the students who didn't study studied even less, and the hard working students decided they wanted a free ride, so they studied little. They all got a D.
Then the third test was an F.
As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.
In the end, to their surprise, everyone failed the class.
Socialism will ultimately fail, because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.
It is in our human nature wanting to excel. In turn, it will never be compatible with a socialist style of government, because the world has producers and non-producers.

My favorite meme about socialism or communism is the meme where some people insist "That true communism has never been tried!" True communism isn't fucking achievable. Socialism will only lead to communism over time.
