I just bought 5 lbs of carrots for $3

Head of lettuce for .35 cents.

Celery is $1 for a bunch.

Rice and beans have a fucking shitload of calories. I understand that if you're poor, you need calories, but it adds up so fast. If you want to fill full, you'll be fat as fuck if you eat mostly rice and beans.
>>
>>75615004
Because most people know fuck all about cooking. People think "I'm going to cook this one meal for each day and that'll be healthy and inexpensive! What!? Why is it so expensive?" when you should cook in bulk. You'd be surprised how much people cook personal meals and then complain about the cost. Buying food in bulk is way cheaper than buying individual ingredients to make a little meal. I buy a fuckton of chicken and beef because I have a smoker. I cook and smoke it all and I have my protein for the entire week, three meals a day for around $90.
>>

Most poor people have poor education of food and meal prep. They see shitty frozen foods or fast food (void of nutrients) and think it's a good deal/filling. If you were to fill a shopping cart with rice, beans, greens, and a bit of fruit, they'd laugh at you for "not buying real food" and say it's too expensive, even when all that food can inexpensively provide meals for the week vs. their shitty fast food that lasts one day or less.

Also, rich libfags live in areas where "healthy" means buying a $12 of raw kombucha, so their perception of efficient shopping and meal prop is skewed too.
>>
>>75615004

Eat yogurts (w/coupons you can pay ~50c per) and boiled eggs (3$max x18) for breakfast with bulk muesli or granola w/ milk. Gallon of milk per week is a few dollars.

I don't know murican prices but I cook for myself and my mom. We're going at about 700$ a month. I think we eat pretty healthy. Almost never deep fry anything.

Basics of my meals is

Onions
Carrots
Paprika
Green Beans
Corn

With this you can stir fry it in a wok, cook it as a stew, steam it.

You can add chicken meat with it any kind really.

Then you also have cauliflower and brocoli that go well together.

Mushrooms can always be added to the mix.

Lettuce can be filled with cheap minced meat.
Paprika can be filled with cheap minced meat and cooked in a tomato stew. Well call it Chufte here.

Then if you have eggs, flour, yeast and milk you can make from Bread to Pancackes in 30 minutes.

I see all these poor niggers living in some sort of suburbs with small houses.

Takes this picture here. See all that grass? Why isn't there tons of vegetables and fruit trees planted there?

Empty calories refers to foods that have a high caloric density, but a relatively low amount of nutritional value. Usually foods high in sugar.

The negative calories myth has nothing to do with the concept of empty calories.

Why are Americans so retarded?
>>
I get my groceries at Walmart. They have a lot of real food there that most people ignore for frozen breakfast sandwiches and frosted cookies.
>>
>>75615216

Negative calories is a myth.

But carrots are the worst vegetable to eat considering they have so much sugar.

Stick to brocolli and brussels sprouts. They aren't memefood yet because the normies haven't memed them to the point of annoyance.

Remember kids. Memes are for normies.

People need to stop consuming fast food, it's addictive as fuck. After you give it up for a while, it becomes fucking disgusting and you'll never want to eat it again.

Rice, fibrous vegetables, potato, oats are all super inexpensive and satisfying sources of carbs.
Skinless chicken breast and certain fish are cheap sources of protein.
Nuts and stuff can be a little more expensive, but don't need to be eaten in vast quantities and are good sources of fats.
Learn to use good sauces and spices, it's pretty fucking easy to get by.

/pol/ is so retarded when it comes to nutrition it makes me want to gag.

A medium sized carrot has about 3g of sugar in it, which make up about half of it's total carbohydrate profile. Carbs are not the enemy, overeating is.

You would have to eat about 15 carrots to get as much sugar as you would get from a can of coke, so carrots are not going to kill you.

5 pounds of carrots contains approximately 930 calories, or 310 calories per dollar spent. For comparison, a McDouble from McDonalds is 390 calories for $1 plus sales tax, perhaps a bit more at certain locations. It might seem an odd standard to use, but the McDouble is one of the most cost efficient items on McDonald's menu, or any restaurant menu for that matter, and the best example of how far you can take a dollar when buying unhealthy food.

Carrots aren't even the most cost efficient vegetable to buy. I can buy a two pound bag of frozen peas for ~$2, containing 700 calories, or 350 calories per dollar spent. I can buy a 3 pound bag of frozen baby lima beans for ~$4.50, containing 1800 calories, or 400 calories per dollar spent.

If we want to get into serious cost efficiency, I can buy regular or sweet potatoes for roughly 50 cents per pound (it varies). Two pounds of sweet potatoes contains about 770 calories, meaning 770 calories per dollar.

There is no monetary excuse to not include items like these in your diet.

When it gets warmer in the summer and they begin to bolt, I'm already switching over to cucumbers, strawberries, peppers, tomatoes, squash, pumpkin, and small melons (cant grow much fruit in my climate) and then I re-plant cold hardy roots and veggies for the fall and winter. I change what I grow each year based on interest or trying something new. I always keep plenty of herbs going year-round.

Gardens are inexpensive and easy to do if you don't overestimate your ability.

I was a hobo for like a year due to being put between a rock and a really hard place financially. Lived up in the mountains near Roseburg, Oregon and kept a farm up and going for most my food. Fished and caught game for meat.

It was ludicrously easy to survive. When I was in the middle of rotating crops or couldn't get fish I could go into town and dumpster dive behind food markets. They don't lock their dumpsters 99% of the time and all the food is fresh because the dump it in from a week to several months before expiration, sealed 90% of the time, and they empty the dumpsters almost every day.

It would literally be impossible for me to starve in this country if I tried. America will run out of air before it runs out of excess food. If I can survive on $0 then stupid lazy retards have the opportunity to survive on a monthly salary. That's what this is; the land of opportunity. Not the land of gifts.

This isn't a thing. A sauce is made with the juice, some flour and something to bring out the flavor (veggies, spices, ect).
Not the meat itself.

You wouldn't be referring to pot au feu? That's completely different, that's not a sauce at all.

A lot of it is the logistics of going to the grocery store to buy fresh food and the time it takes to cook it. And chicken are dirt cheap. But that means you need to hit up the store once or twice a week.

Also eating healthy is one thing, but who wants to just wat healthy, people want to eat shit that tastes good. So now you want spices for your chicken, sauce for your veggies. Etc.

You can eat healthy cheap, but you're eating bland food over and over again, and you have to have the time and means to cook it.

It's not that it's expensive to eat health, it's a pain in the ass. Where as if you have money it's easy to eat healthy.

What are you going to do with the carrots? Feed them to your rabbits?

Shit neighborhoods don't have stores with fresh food, there's no demand, so they don't stock it. I could go a long way to a store and buy arm fulls of fresh veg that would take time to prepare and to cook (you know, like, to add flavor). Or, I could buy a cheap ass ready meal that takes 4 minutes in the microwave from the 7/11 across the road...

When you're working 10 hour shifts, you don't want to ome home and work in front of the stove.
>>
>>75616839
Part of the reason produce is expensive is the amount stores have to throw way when it ripens. Packaged, processed foods basically don't expire. But for every one (banana, avocado, pineapple, etc.) that gets sold, one (or two) ripen in the bin and end up in the dumpster behind the store.

Because it's an excuse. The postmodern condition is to blame as many problems as possible on externality

In reality stocking your cupboard with beans, oats, potatoes, rice and pasta is much cheaper than eating a 4-6 dollar burger every night, in fact for that price you can feed at least two and up to four if you don't have a specific dieting condition (high protein, high fibre, low carbs, etc).

Almost everybody in this thread is missing the fact that poor communities are often 'food deserts' with only corner stores, gas stations and fast food being sources for food. People often can't afford to make a 20 mile trip to a real grocery store to buy food to prepare.

Poor neighborhoods don't have stores with cheap fresh food, you have to travel to get it. Also, it takes time to prepare and cook.

The alternative unhealthy prepared food is much quicker and easier and cheaper (after time and fuel costs are factored in).

As for getting the food in, most corner shops stock frozen vegetables (even if it is bland) otherwise you can use one of your days off to go and get it. Believe it or not but the days off aren't there to have fun. Its to prepare for more work. Its unfortunate that anybody could get themselves into a daily 12-hour minimum wage shift position but its by and large their own fault.

Yer silly! Sustainable gardening pays for itself. Sure I spent money on wood and mulch to make my garden pretty, but you don't need that. Technically heirloom seeds and some startup dirt is the only thing you need to pay for. ONCE.

Get heirloom seeds, grow crops, collect seeds, and you don't have to pay for seeds ever again unless you fuck up or or want other varieties.

You take all of your garden and food scrap (that's that correct type) and compost with it. So you never have to buy fertilizer or new dirt.

Use rain barrels and gray-water to water your plants.

Plan your garden using permaculture methods in order to support a mini-ecosystem, so predators take care of pests, so you don't have to worry about bugs or critters messing with your food.

You can use a variety of natural scavenged things to make trellises, supports, borders, etc.

For instance, this year the only money I spent on my garden was buying some new seeds for variety and some flowers for looks (which were completely optional). And when the summer months roll around, I'll have way too much food to eat. For practically free.

I think every poor person should try to garden. Hell even if they grow one or two things, they can trade with their neighbor growing a few things, and so on and so forth. Build a community. Educate one another. You know, things that help people get out of poverty.

I think you're the retarded one here :)

Growing your own food is awesome, I won't deny that, but you hardly get anything from it. You will never survive on home grown fruit and vegetables, unless you have your own private, let's say, 20x20m field to grow stuff in, for quantity and variety.

For me it's even worse, because I live in colder climates. Few fruit plants survive here, and most bear small or sour fruit, while with root vegetables and spring plants you run the risk of frost all the way to mid-May.

Norwegian strawberries are apparently god tier, though.

Shower facilities and Spank™* dispensers will also be provided in these areas, as will public video game halls and basketball courts.

* Spank™ is a drug I just invented, which makes the user stoned, lazy, and creates the desire to do nothing but masturbate all day. It's part THC, part depressant, part appetite suppressant (saves on ration bars), part deliriant, part birth control, and part tranquilizer. I think we live in similar climates, because it frosts here Oct/Nov-mid May. Remember, if your soil is alive and decomposing, its temperature will rise. Science 101. So that means you can plant weeks earlier and later in the season. Plus many greens and root veggies can tolerate frost.

Fruits aren't necessary for human survival. Its better to live in northern climates and grow roots and green vegetables anyway.

Black Beans(1 cup dry)
1 cube beef or chicken bullion
2 slices of thick cut bacon, chopped

Take the beans and soak them overnight.
Drain and rinse, gets rid of the stuff that makes you gassy.
Boil on medium/low for a few hours.
Crush up the bullion and stir in, let cook for a minute or two.
Add in the bacon.
Continue cooking for 10-15 minutes.
Serve.
Something that goes great on the side to dip in is to take a lighter cheese like mozzerella, slap some on some triangle cut toast, and broil that until it melts. Shit's amazing and pretty cheap, macros are relatively balanced, calories arent through the roof without the cheesy bread, and god fucking damn its lazy and easy to make if you make it in advance.
Just don't eat a shitton of it or you'll be on the toilet all night, like any bean.

For someone really trying to stretch a budget, fresh healthy foods are a huge money sink. We do. The last time I was at a youth hostel on Maui, I overheard some Scandinavians, "vegetables here are expensive, but you can get 20 chicken nuggets at McDonald's for 5$, that's unbelievable! Back home it would cost like $20"

That pretty much sums up the difference between Europe and America's food choices. There really are food deserts in America, there are people who don't have cars, so they have to depend on the close by bodegas and fast food places. In many of these documentaries about inner city blacks- they have to take the bus to a far away grocery store, and they can't stretch their budget on the higher priced fresh produce. They often have to go to the nearby bodegas, which lack fresh produce.

These people can still eat healthy on a budget, but it will take some education and know-how.

>Australia, the flattest, driest, and geologically oldest vegetated continent, has a uniquely high proportion of nutrient-poor soils.

To grow something in your backyard in Australia, you would need a lot of bags of fertiliser, which can be costly.

Because it's cutting season, faggot. No white anything except cauliflower.

And pre-show diet should be even more strict. If your shooting for 3%, you're never going to see a carrot for at least 20 weeks.

It's a poor source of food unless you are poor as fuck. Rice only diet will eventually damage your body. White rice is the worst offender in this.

>We're not all lucky enough to be born middle class mate.
Born dirt poor and had to work my arse off to get to where I am.
>beans taking too long
Buy some canned ones then. You don't have to be anal about eating healthy but even canned food is better than a readymeal.
As for the rice, its just cheap bulk to get you through the day. But even thats still healthier than a ready meal.

This guy knows how it is. Even if you can't afford the meat you can throw in vegetables instead.

>5 lbs of carrots for $3
That's like 2.3kg for $3, isn't it? When your minimum wage is somewhere between $7~$8, I think it is relatively expensive.
