Most people considered to be genius are handicapped in the sense that they are good only in one field. Stephen Hawking is a brilliant guy, I've read his books... but I don't think he has a clue when it comes to politics.
Specially in his case: years and years spent on astronomical research (no real time spent studying the outisde world, people, etc) and paraplegic, bound to a wheelchair (no real time socializing).
