The reason this is important is that for NASA to calculate the amount of fuel needed for the trip they would have had to have known the distance between the Earth and the Moon at the target location of interception with the lunar orbiter to within 100 feet or less.
The number they gave out for this location was given to multiple news organizations during multiple different interviews by the same individuals as six different numbers. Von Braun gives a totally different number that, if true, would indicate that the moon is a different mass than what we have been told all these years.
