The ASVAB effectively prevents anyone more than one standard deviation below average intelligence from joining the military. The US military was the earliest institution to use IQ tests to screen applicants. I'm taking advantage of Tuition assistance to finish my BS before I get out, at which point I'll roll my feder retirement over to a federal law enforcement job thanks to having a BS and 5 years in the militafy, use my untouched GI bill to study auto mechanics, and the VA loan to buy a house. Their backgrounds are checked, their medical records are scanned over, etc. If you ever lie about anything during processing, and they find out, you are absolutely fucked. The US military does not mess around at all when it comes to admittance.
No it's not perfect. Yes, sometimes they let through some people that shouldn't be let through, but by and large entrance is heavily screened.

Unfortunately, you only see the military on the news for non-war related war things for two reasons: someone did something really fucking smart or really fucking stupid.
