I can only speak for myself, but I rekindled my old love of reading by starting out with some short stories/novelle by great writers from the 20th century. Once I'd properly regained my reading comprehension and attention span I moved on to larger works by writers like Dostoyevsky/Kafka/Dickens. Getting to grips with the language of older writers made tackling some of the major works of Western philosophy a lot easier.
Now I can get at something like Carlyle's history of the French Revolution without feeling like I'm drowning in mountains of romanticist prose,
