I want to learn how to speak Portuguese with a European accent, but nearly all the language-learning materials I come across are made by Brazilians. The only recording of Os Lusíadas on the internet is done by a Brazilian. It's making me want to give up Portuguese. Feels bad, chaps.

It's similar to the difference between Latin American and Peninsular Spanish, it's not that complicated desu. The language itself is the same with small modifications.
>>
>>75551461
Btw why would you learn it with a European accent? Brazilian accent is more beautiful desu
>>
>>75551461
even better. i bet there are portuguese people that teach portuguese in the UK.

>>
>>75551666

It's just a hobby,. Going to Portugal just in order to learn the language isn't feasible, unfortunately.

>>75551749

Unless I'm mistaken, there is a much greater difference between European and Brazilian Portuguese than there is between either Latin American Spanish and Peninsular Spanish or American English and English English.
>>
>>75551749
the accent is actually very different. and i understand why he needs portuguese material to study even some differences in graphism (dunno if thats the word) still applies.

A few years ago there an orthographic agreement that officially cucked the portuguese language to become more similar to brazilian-portuguese. This is one more detail that makes us the cuck-lords of Europe.

To be quite honest, you should try to contact some of the many, many brit expats living in Algarve. There's so many of them, some small villages are essentially English territory :P

If anyone can hook you up with the best learning materials, it should be them.

I read about this. Has there been any resistance in Portugal to the change? Does anybody there still use the old system? Is there any chance of undoing the changes and returning to the old ways? I'd feel absolutely humiliated if we changed our spelling to conform to the American system.
>>
>>75551461

Portuguese is a beautiful and complex language.

Learn a latin language; french, italian, portuguese. Whichever. This will change your perspective at life.

ps: 98% of people who talk portuguese can't understand ''Os Lusíadas''. It's very very old.
>>
>>75552716
Yes, a lot of influent people in Portugal and Brazil are actively fighting it. It is a disgusting attack on our language meant to "unify" lusophone countries. Many people just won't use it outside of oficial documents that MS Word autocorrects.

>>
>>75552716

There has been some resistance but I don't think it's going away. Some people who write columns in newspapers have a note saying "Written with the old orthographic rules" and kids are being taught the new ones.

Whenever I brought it up in bars and tried to have a conversation about it I am attacked for being "against evolution" and I had to literally hear some guy screaming at me "Are you against the evolution of things?". I try to explain that language is part of a nation's identity and that it shouldn't be forced to change, instead it should naturally change over time. I don't think there is much of a chance of undoing the changes and yes it is humiliating but it's "le progressive thing to do, fuck le system, fuck le borders!!!!"

I doubt there's very much literature of interest written in Galician. They don't have a great poet like Camões who ranks with Dante, Virgil, Homer, and Milton, as far as I'm aware. Besides, Portugal is our oldest ally.

It seems that Galician does have a long and respectable literature, to judge from what I've been reading for the past few minutes. I suppose that it wouldn't be too troublesome to pick it up after learning Portuguese because of the similarities between the two. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I've been to the Galician countryside and it feels pretty much the same as the Trás-os-Montes countryside. It's absolutely beautiful.

This really surprised me:

>In his early years, Pessoa was influenced by major English classic poets as Shakespeare, Milton and Pope, or romantics like Shelley, Byron, Keats, Wordsworth, Coleridge and Tennyson.

And the fact that he published extensively in English. I'm not used to foreigners really caring about our literature to that extent. I'll definitely look into him.

You wouldn't have found a man in Edwardian England without a moustache either. What's your point?

They have darker skin because of the hot climate.

If the Portuguese were a Moorish race they wouldn't have made such astounding accomplishments these past 700 years.

It doesn't even make sense to talk about european spanish as a whole. There are a lot "dialects" and accents.

Why do you guys drop your s so frequently when speaking spanish? Lots of times when I hear someone speak spanish they drop lots of s's in the middle of words. How frequent is that?

For example:
estamos viendo el partido con los ultras
becomes
e'tamo' viendo el partido con lo' ultra'
>>
>>75557396
I dont hear that here in Galicia at all..

That video I posted is Bable (Asturian). They called it a dialect of Castillian for so many years, but I have always thought it was a language on its own. And it seems to be a common opinion among the academy now too. Its ancestor was probably the language spoken on the ancient kingdom of Leon.

Btw OP I was about to ask the same question on /luso/ (/int/) yesterday. European Portuguese sounds so much better to me and if I use it it'll only be in Portugal or with Portuguese people so I have no interest in learning how to speak Brazilian. I'll never get why they use você and the few differences between words triggers me way too much. There are a few videos for learning European Portuguese on youtube or some empty websites but well, not so much and they only teach you the basics. I guess watching Portuguese movies/listening to Portuguese songs/videos in general could help, but it's a fucking pain in the ass to find them.
Try to find Portuguese people to speak to.
Anyway, practising and learning Brazilian Portuguese can still give you some clues so don't hesitate to try.

>>75560990
desu when I talked to actual portuguese people I found out that I could understand spanish or Italian better than PT portuguese - and they were from coimbra/porto. It seems to me that somewhere in time you guys transcended language and left behind vowels and some sort of "brakes", so to speak, when talking, shit's too fast, and I say this not to disparage.
