don't go to Rome or any other big city (especially don't go to Verona or Venezia they're full of tourists). Italia has many very nice places in the campagna where you'll find no shitskins, very few tourists and real italian traditions and culture. And most of the people there don't speak english and some not even italian so it's also an adventure in discovery.
Also next time you I'd recommend walking away from the beaten track otherwise you'll see nothing more than what you could get from a brochure.

It is a nice city yes, the arena is beautiful and I don't know about others but just being in that place is awe inspiring even if it's not the biggest or the oldest. One nice thing is if you happen upon some festa there are always lots of italian germans around and they've got bretty good food and beer. No. Just a flat no.
However, it would making learning those languages a breeze.
There were a lot of shifts that occured from Latin. Much of it is predictable. So if you knew Latin and looked at an Italian word you'd be able to figure it out (probably), especially if you looked at the shifts. But the reverse isn't necessarily true.
Also French is the furthest from Latin, you'll have difficulty with them.

Moreover, Etruscans dominated the area around Rome and the city for quite a bit, it's hard to know if the aristocracies intermixed during the kingdom. Consider that some Emperors into the 1st century AD are attested to know the Etruscan language before it got lost.

Spanish and Italian are very similar. They are both romantic languages that originated from Latin. If you were fluent in Latin, you would be able to understand many Spanish and Italian words.
