I won my region's spelling bee in a predominantly white New England suburb and went to DC for the national one. I was knocked out immediately in the national one since I got burned out from studying and couldn't compare to the other kids, but one of the perks was that I could still stay and watch the whole thing and visit museums and stuff. I got to be friends with my alternate, the 2nd place finisher at the regional bee, who was Bengali and much smarter than me. I learned spelling by reading a lot as well as studying a foreign language (Italian).
