Does Trump know something that we don't? It seems he was really dead set on debating Sanders. I'm guessing he found out about some DNC shenanigans cooking behind closed doors and decided that the best course of action is to bail from this.
If he knows for certain that the DNC is dead set on giving the nomination to Hillary or Biden and Bernie's nomination is 100% unlikely, I can see why he'd pull out. I still think it would've done wonders to gain some Bernie supporters if he'd done the debate though.

To do that he would look weak. He would not be able to attack and his rethoric would have to be severely changed.
It would be difficult to fight Bernie whilst trying to gain his supporters because his supporters are the other extreme of Trump in many issues.

Remember when he refused to go to that republican debate and raise money for veterans instead? Most of us thought that was a bad move, and yet here he is as the Republican nominee. Think about it. Bernie has won most of the states that actually vote dem. Clinton blew sanders out in the south. She got her 40-50 pt wins in Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia and the like. All states that Trump will win. Sanders is winning blue states, but since Hillary did so well in the red states, she has an insurmountable lead. Clinton is playing it safe, by staying out of the light, and riding her wave to victory. Trump has not done this thus far, but has had his foot on the gas, no matter how large a lead he has. He now realizes that the finish line is very very close, and getting in a battle with someone he doesn't HAVE to beat (He DOES have to beat Hillary, so he'll go head to head with her) is too risky.
And Bernbots are going to be even madder, now that Hillary will continue to do literally nothing, and still win the nomination. They will literally be berned out.

By pushing the idea of a Trump/Sanders debate, he gave him some support while debasing Hillary by not offering her the same courtesy. This feigns relevance for Bernie and garners him extra attention going into the last round of elections on 6/7. Trump throwing out a ghost of a bone to Bernie gets him attention from Bernouts while at the same time making it more difficult for Hillary to win the last batch of primaries
