A communist society truly being stateless would have to involve worldwide co-operation, the dissolving of states as we know it, and the crash of the global market so it can amalgamate into a whole.
For it to work in a state (like the Soviet Union or Cambodia etc.), there must be totalitarian rule so social engineering can take place effectively.

The darwinism and lack of equality in capitalism is the reason why stuff actually works, not necessarily efficient (many fail, few succeed) but in the end effective. We can soften the negative fallout from capitalism with things like social security or charities, so the only chance to have both freedom and somewhat equality would be in form of a free market. Communism can't be free because it hinders people to take economical risks and patronizes its people by being centralized. It also can't guarantee equality because you need an elite that organizes everything and that wants to keep its power inside of their artificial monopoly.
