He means that desal plants require so much energy that nukes are the only real solution but panicky NIMBY lolberals think nuke plants are scawwy. So their solution is to make "sustainable" power options that cannot feasibly meet demand for large-scale desal networks.

Agreed. Good luck finding an actual environmentalist who doesn't support this, unlike the bullshit strawmen you morons are creating to knock over. There is no such thing as an environmentalist that's going to tell you to waiste water planting tropical plants in California. Period. That's the fucking republicunts who are saying it's okay to destroy the environment so you can water my yard, because they don't give a flying shit.

>Yeah they initiated the problem and perpetuated it but it's not their fault #notallenvironmentalists

Literally a fantasy. California's Central Valley is classified as a desert for 7 months of the year. Arizona gets more rain than the Central Valley does in the summer.

The real problem is we keep overpopulating with spics and building more houses. California can't sustain this population growth primarily because a large part of it is a desert at least part of the year.

If we do that, then lowering water restrictions is plausible.

Farming in the Central Valley is fucked anyway, and not completely due to the water.

What schools don't tell you unless you specifically go into Plant Sciences and plant-based ecology is that the areas Californians farm in all used to flood consistently, yearly. Circa 1850 you couldn't walk from Tahoe to San Francisco in the winter due to it being flooded.

This is relevant because flooding brings in alluvium - which is why California's soil is amazing for growing crops. We have millenia of alluvium in our soil that we're burning through at an extremely fast rate and with no flooding to restore it.

That's because there is no solution. You can't sustain tens of millions of people and growing, with massive agriculture also with NO FUCKING WATER. I don't know why Californians can't comprehend this. Water is a basic fucking necessity of founding a population center and Californians don't have it.

They closed the aquaduct because of the smelt fish. It caused most land to dry up and die, and farmers to go out of business because they had to start importing water by truck.

Trump literally means what he says. People who valued small fish over human beings (environmentalists) are to blame, and he will solve it giving farmers the aquaduct back, aka by opening up the water.

>>
>>75289376
Okay, Anon, I get where you're coming from.

However - you're wrong, it's not that easy. The president does not have that power.

Delta Smelt were on the endangered species list (they're extinct in the wild now). The endangered species act is an incredibly, overwhelmingly powerful piece of legislation. One of the most powerful we have, actually. You can't just overturn it. The environmentalists had little to do with this at all, and not even the President can use an executive order to say "free the water!" when there's an animal protected by the ESA in there.

You don't get it. Even if you could jump all the hurdles to get them built, desalination isn't going to provide California enough water. It's still a massive population in the middle of the desert.
>>
>>75289656

I get that it's not that simple, but that's what he's getting at. I mean, I figure he's got at least some plan for it.

The smelt are important for salmon - or something. Maybe he meant something different to what I proposed, but I know a lot of Californians who are pissed that the number 8(?7?) economy in the world went to shit in their lifetime.

>>
>>75282297
California is not a desert, it gets more than enough rain and snowfall to support itself without needing to rely on the Colorado river. Its just horribly, horribly mismanaged across the entire state. Environmentalists are a big part of that.

Trump is talking about two things there. First and mainly, a huge amount of California's snowmelt gets wasted every year due to environmental nonsense. They let it all run out into the ocean instead of building up in reservoirs so the special snowflake salmon have perfect conditions every year for their breeding runs. Secondly, if environmentalists would get out of the way and allow for the construction of new Nuclear Power Plants, we could build desalination plants that would make up for our very regular drought years because lets face it we will never get our retarded water allocation laws fixed.

You are literally retarded and can't into problem solving. From my lazy nigger math and Google stats it says you need over 11 trillion gallons of water in California. The largest plant produces 50 million gallons a day. Even if you build 10 plants it would take 60 years to solve your problems. And I haven't even touched the logistics of funding them and you don't have the ability to power them. If you somehow managed to fund building them and turning them on the operation would bankrupt California even further considering desalinated water costs, California would single handedly double the national debt producing water so congrats
>>
>>75292015
The main users of water are agriculture users. The ones who can most easily afford to pay more are individuals who want to shower and flush their toilets.

In fact they are probably paying too much since they are forced to buy water out of an artificially small allocation pool.

By selling water from a common stream there would be less water used because large consumers would be priced out ( and these are businesses that mostly employ illegals - lol )

If you overfish the salmon AND there aren't enough salmon evening making it to the ocean anyway, the numbers of salmon are gonna drop exponentially and we'll be paying $20 for a fucking filet. Wrong. If you can grow food in fucking space, you can grow it in a desert too.

It's actually illegal to collect rain water in California as a citizen due to health issues (mosquitoes). Water distribution is controlled by the local government here, i don't have the money to build the infrastructure needed to transport water. Don't tell me bottle'd water cause that's a private business not under California jurisdiction.
>>
>>75295977
Collecting water in rain barrels is illegal. I may be wrong because this class was like a decade ago but I thought collecting grey water was illegal
>>
>>75295679
That is just one aspect, its a wide collection of problems that result in California's water problems.
>Water allocation is based on the amount of precipitation from one of the wettest years ever
>Much of the water every year is wasted on environmental projects or is allocated to a place that doesn't need/end up using it
>Region very regularly experiences a set of very dry years about once every decade, yet state government NEVER plans ahead for them and is always somehow taken by surprise
>Over the years farmers have gravitated toward crops that require assloads of water, and refuse to switch to anything better suited for the climate conditions
>Instead of taking any action to better manage our water supply, state government for some reason always blames the ~10% residential use and tries to force more and more conservation nonsense down everyone's throat

>>75295977
Nope, LA is within a Mediterranean climate zone along with most of the state. Only one corner is an actual desert.
>>
>>75296274
Claims are not arguments good bye
>>
>>75295856
Best way is not necessarily always the cheapest. You can literally see the photosynthesis of Americas cornfields from space they are so large. Converting such an operation would be fiscally massive. Cheapest option always trumps the efficient one in bureaucracy
>>

Every single response is annihilating you and you keep coming back for more. It's sad, you are a cuck.

>Instead of taking any action to better manage our water supply, state government for some reason always blames the ~10% residential use and tries to force more and more conservation nonsense down everyone's throat

This is the biggest problem IMO. The farmers union has total control over water distribution in our state, it is not a free market. Then they continue with terrible farming practices with ass backward water laws and push the blame onto the average citizen which make up a small fraction of water use in this state.
>>
>>75282768
>Steals several states worth of water

Not even true.

California relies on water reclaimed in reservoirs across the state.

I live in Far Nor Cal where we don't have water issues until we get told to not water because LA fags are retarded about water conservation.
>>
>>75285868
Just because it is called the Colorado River doesn't mean it ends in Colorado buddy. That river flows through multiple states and each deserve access to the water it provides.
>>
>>75297626
Don't blame the citizens, we had across the board decline in water usage except for Beverly Hills. The farmers have to do their part, but the farmer lobby is too strong.
>>
>>75289609
You know what I never understood, why every Californian is a snide obnoxious self absorbed cunt.
>>
>>75297425
Thing is even with retarded farmers making poor crop choices that eat up 80% of the water used, we would still have the water to cover it if the whole system wasn't so horrifically managed. Just taking some steps to prepare for the drought years by not wasting every drop we get in wet years would be a good start.
>>
Except there is no drought we just flush the water into the ocean
>>
And on the 8th day Lord Trump said: "Let there be water"
And yay, there was water.
>>
>>75297802
Farmers are the biggest welfare queens in this state. paid when they have a good crop, paid when they don't.

You basically never make water, that's the point of the water cycle, a dam just 'redistributes' it from water that was going to the sea and puts it an a place that is not the fucking ocean. It's not really a difficult concept.
>>
That should work out great, just like opening up the electric power market in California worked out. Oh wait!

Plenty of environmentalist policies have literally wasted trillions of gallons of fresh water,
what consumes plenty of water is the farming,
also plenty of water comes from within the state
>>
>>75298850
But muh almonds. (I think we export around 80% of almonds produced in Cali, which takes up to 11% of total water usage in the state.)

>rivers are waste
>>
This entire thread and not one person talks about Sierra snowpack being decimated by rising temperatures? Even in the midst of what was supposed to be the strongest el nino ever, sierra snowpack in march was only 96% of normal and by the end of april was down near 30% of normal for that time of year. Last year it was less than 5% of normal. There's only so much water we can pump out of the ground, it's a limited resource. Desalination isn't a terrible idea, it's just incredibly energy intensive. But perhaps seeing as how the central valley is an integral part of the nation's fresh food supply, there could be some damn investment in it. Water gained by halting conservation efforts is a pittance compared to how much the state has lost from climate instability. It's too bad most people aren't even aware of the basics of this situation when it is something that will actually affect their lives. Faggots
>>
>>75298850
that is a cool fucking thing pictured
>>
>>75298253
Yeah the mother of rivers, that's nice and all but the river's length is longer outside your state than in it, you don't have the right to change the direction of that river just because you think it is "yours". I actually think it is illegal to change the direction of a river like that. Also saying you own a river when you have literally the least amount of major tributaries (literally one, you are tied with Nevada) that lead into that river is retarded.

>>75298197
No you fuckwit, the Colorado lies literally on the border between Arizona and California. Not to mention it is the border between Arizona and Nevada. If any state has the right to cut California off it would be Arizona. Not only is the longest stretch of the river within Arizona borders, we have two of the top 4 tributary rivers leading into the Colorado River. Utah could be a contender as well with 4 of the seven major tributaries into the Colorado. Also I'm not Californian, I just think that you Coloradans are just as retarded as them.
>>
>>75282297
I also love how in that speech Trump said the drought isnt as bad as people are making it.

As a californian i agree 100%
>>
>>75300041
Sorry Utah only has 3 of the seven major tributaries into the Colorado, not 4.
>>
>>75299561
>California deserves even more free federal money for their water infrastructure!

No, anon. The real solution is not having all of our vegetables grown in California and having free market water.

Of course, California would have to lose millions of people to make that work, but it wouldn't run the risk of completely collapsing at some point in the future
>>
>>75282297
Desalination would solve California's water problems permanently. But muh hollywood beachfront property!
>>
>>75300041

>california is a desert meme

Even though california has more forests than any other state, the whole sacramento valley should be/was wetlands, we use our own snow runoff for water.

>>
>>75283454
Farmers contribute way more to the drought. Fuck them and their stupid wasteful "muh water rights" bull shit. They just don't want to have to change their irrigation methods.
>>
>>75299561
There's not much reason to mention it because its not something policy and economics can change. We know we are in a fucked spot in Cali (at least i do). At this point we have to sleep in the bed we created.
>>
>>75300177
They're not all grown in California, there's a complex chain of growing operations that stretch from northern california all the way down through mexico depending on the time of year. I'm not really arguing that California doesn't have some issues with its arcane water rights system, but you'd be hard pressed to find another area in the US with infrastructure and existing work force to replace what california grows. We don't have 15-20 years to wait for new orchards to grow somewhere else, people gotta eat.
>>
>>75300274
Too energy inefficient, we are going to have rolling blackouts here in so-cal due to a gas refinery explosion.
>>
>>75300041
You're literally mentally invalid aren't you? The river does lie on that border, it doesn't originate there. Are you actually trying to imply that the river doesn't start in Colorado and most of the water isn't melt off from the Rocky Mountains?

>>75300413

Guess you don't like to eat.

We export foods that are water inefficient. The farmers refuse to change irrigation methods because of costs. Change the crops or update to more efficient irrigation (drip).

>>75300893
I'm down, but most of the state is not due to a shut down nuclear power plant that tax payers are STILL paying for in their electric bills.
>>
>>75300177
Applying free market policies to utilities usually proves quite ineffective. Marginal costs and revenues are very low and suppliers face extremely large fixed costs in the way of difficult acquisition and extensive supply infrastructure. The only way to compensate for this is by essentially creating a monopoly ( look up natural monopoly's). The essence of the free market system can't really apply to water unfortunately, there are insurmountable barriers to entry and almost impossible to establish a market price for producers to accept. In the end you end up with a majority of people priced out of the market.
