All it really is, is an elevated sense of wariness, whereas with people of your own 'kind' you subconsciously relax more. You're right when you say open-mindedness and compromise are virtues to be lived up to, but the commonality of ideals is what allows us to work together, not simply saying "well you're a fellow human and I trust you lol".
