The only reason Russia cares about Crimea is it is their only access to the Baltic Sea. Their base was under lease from Ukraine and was slate to expire. When Ukraine made it clear they would not renew the lease, Russia put it's annexation into motion. Can't blame them really, the US would do the same in that situation.
