Internet piracy is theft.

Stop justifying it
>b-but I dindu nuffin........
>m-mmuh difficulty in access

you're a filthy, degenerate criminal

If you pirate, you violate intellectual property and hence abdicate the notion of individual property rights and are therefore a communist.

Why are you communist freaks, /pol/?

Many people who pirate content would not use or watch it if they had to pay for it. There's no loss of income here, they wouldn't buy it anyway. Instead, they do talk about it and create free advertising, this kind of advertising, mouth to mouth, is also one of the most effective ones I think.

Win win for everyone.

I remember in the 90's I bought a full game for 50 Gulden.
Now I pay € 60,- for a poorly developed game that has one third the content.
Then I need to pay extra to unlock content called DLC which is already included in the original game.
All in all I've payed over € 100,- per game these last years and all have them were major dissapointments compared to what was offered in terms of,... everything besides graphics.
Hence I pirate, if I like the game I simply buy it afterwards or if I really like it I buy a copy after a few hours of playing.
Also some older games cannot run on Steam for some reason, not even with the latest patches, there is simply no other way to play it than to download some version of it. Fucking Dark Messiah, Y U NO WORK!

It's not a monopoly as they don't compete in the same arenas at all. "Piracy" prior to the interbutt was largely criminals SELLING actual physical copies in competition with legitimate vendors.

This is obviously a destructive influence on the market. Distributing digital copies for free isn't comparable in terms of monoploly. No-one is going out of their way in the market to make people pirate anything.
>>
>>75262538

>>
>>75263971
>If it was worth it it would sell.
Wrong.
Piracy offers an identical product at zero price. The rational consumer consumes infinite of pirated good and zero non-pirated good, ignoring contingent risks of getting caught and negative utility of "feeling bad".

The people that "pirate now, pay later" make up such a small minority.

If you don't pay for something, you don't have a right to use it you freeloading hippie

Look at games without piracy.

Overwatch sold like fucking hotcakes because it's fun as balls. Battleborn is already 40% off, and down to like 3k players despite being out less than a month because people think Gearbox is a piece of shit, and the game looks horrible. The game isn't even that bad, just ugly. It's the developers that people hate.

Now imagine that with the possibility of getting the game free. I've bought Roller Coaster Tycoon physically, on gog, and on Steam, but I'd never pay for a game I hate.

When does the true piracy begin ?
If I get (borrow) a game from a friend, is this piracy ? If I knew this person from a community dedicated to game sharing, is this piracy ? If the guys from the community sends it from the internet, is it piracy ? If I know him, is it piracy ?

look at it from the formula of the universal law

Musician, here.

Back when YouTube wasn't the total clusterfuck it is now, I received a message from an American who informed he had used a 'cool new trick' to download my entire collection of work, and that it would be 'perfect' for his road trip across the country.

Was I happy about this? bollocks was I. Everyone has overheads they need to cover (some more than others, fair enough) but the principle is universal.

But if you burn a copy of it, or worse transcode it and give it to 100,000 people, then yes.

There is a big difference between "sharing" and piracy.

The platforms which electronically enforce this (DRM) are viewed extremely negatively by people because in reality, they just want free shit.

In the case of the small business, the distributor and the inventor/creator are usually one and the same, meaning that they actually deserve money.

People who create are the only ones that matter, and copyright and intellectual property law as it is now just takes advantage of them.

Copy and pasting your projects it's neither theft...

If I get credit for it and get paid for it and you as the creator wouldn't .. it's not theft.. because I simply copy-pasted it.

Of course both of us have the same project in our hands but I got the credit for it - because I copied it from you and hurried to monetize it.

Piracy can actually be one of the greatest things in modern day. The fact that anyone has the ability to gain access to anything they want and increase their potential for giving to humanity. It's one of those things that is an unseen investment into culture. It is probably the greatest thing to ever happen to culture, and it also probably improves the economy. How many people are there that would not have a career if they didn't pirate some program when they were 12 years old? Or think of the amount of influences people have nowadays by pirating music. Piracy makes it so that people have access to information and are able to use that information, which exponentially increases connections to be made.

My view is that the only people who should feel morally culpable pirating programs are people who are making money from it. If you aren't making money from it, and you are doing a hobby that you would have otherwise not even have gotten into, there is no ethical reason why this person should pay. He can only give back to the community and not take away.

No it's not, it's pure capitalism at it's best. Here's the story.

Artists and musicians used to be lower class in society with the exception of the select few that were exceptionally talented. This is rooted in the capitalistic sense of creation of value. However, they had to work hard for what they earned by touring, gaining exposure via a ground game, and exhibiting or performing their work.

Then came technological advancements that allowed for massive reproduction of works and dissemination such as the printing press, recording equipment, radio, and tv. That allowed artist's to reap benefits to scale multiple times over for producing something of value only once. They basically worked hard at one thing once, and were able to live at a higher means thereafter. Of course with competition, it became harder; but the reward was greater. Copying mixed tapes never really put a damper on the business because the quality was shit and people didn't do it on a massive scale.

Finally, technologies such as the Internet, p2p and torrent DL's caught up to it. Without looking at it from a legal standpoint, but more a free market standpoint, their golden years were over. They produced a work and it was disseminated for free. Without litigation, the trend was leaning toward artists' median income declining to what it used to be, but slightly better because of competition and advances.

But they freaked out, lobbied, and litigated. It's the liberals that push for more laws for it. This might make more sense when you think about how in the context of things, artists are almost always liberal now. Having more laws, allows them to bypass the free market and make more money.

I'm especially sensitive to this matter, because artists have become celebrities that are grown ass children. They don't know shit, never held a real job, and think their opinion is gold. And people buy into that shit and idolize these freaks making the world a worse place to live.

Physical property is not ideas.
The person who comes up with the idea owns the idea.
It is theirs to do with what they wish, however, it will always be theirs.
The concept that a corporation can own a patent takes something away from creators.
Creators are literally the only people on this fucking planet doing anything to help anything.

Why haven't you addressed this extremely serious issue?
>come up with brilliant money making idea
>oh that's on company time, it's ours now~
I'm fine with intellectual property law and am in most cases anti-piracy, I literally said that before.
It just needs to be changed to protect the creators instead of the corporations.

Too bad piracy is pretty much over now with the new copyright technology DeNuvo. Look at Doom 4. Normally, it would be online at all pirate sites the day of release, but there's still no legit copies anywhere because DeNuvo can't be hacked.

As more and more games start to use DeNuvo, piracy will be a thing of the past so its a non argument.

Why do you keep talking about scientists.
What if a scientists published his paper on a new invention that can be made at home and bunch of people downloaded it. It hurts him too.
Scientists have nothing to do with piracy though. Scientists aren't the only people that have intellectual property.

Who's law? That's assuming the law is always factually correct. The liberals create most of those laws. I'm arguing it's not communist, it's anticommunist. It's capitalism at it's finest, free from law.. and you throw a law definition out there? Goddamn, that's some circular logic.

Stealing is when you take something from someone else that is not yours. You're not taking something from anybody. You're duplicating it. It's not stealing.

Prices and commodities in the virtual world are not based on resources. They can be replicated for free and almost ad infinitum.
If anything, we are starting to enter what seems like a post-scarcity society. At least just when it comes to digital media.

I pay for movies I really want to see. I'll also pay for game services like gamefly. But usually, I just want to enjoy a game or movie once, finish it, and then delete it forever.

the purpose of life is increasing connections, piracy is an anti-parasite mechanism. Instead of information being parasited and thus decreasing potential for connections, it is flowing. The wealth of one living being within this system of dynamic interrelations does not come anywhere close to increasing the amount of connections that piracy allows. We're taking net gains here. If there was no piracy, you would be on your way to a state of atrophy after a state of homogeny. This process called piracy which beings are involved in is a bypass valve that creates balance. No ideology whether moral, political, or economical will take this principle into consideration. And they don't need to. It's a natural process and it will find a way to balance, just like in the jungle or anywhere else. it is all the same shit.

But if this was made impossible to do now through the actions of the coming conservative pro-bussiness, pro-property Trump administration; though I'd be supremely butthurt about it, I would still vote for it. Because I am not a manchiild who cannot see beyond himself.

What's your point? Overwatch is a multiplayer game and is impossible to pirate. The top selling single player games are heavily pirated at launch and also tend to drop in price rapidly after launch, presumably in an attempt to derive some revenue from people who want to play it, think the price is too high, and feel entitled to play it immediately rather than wait for it to drop to what they seem to be a "fair" price - as I'm sure there is a limited time horizon for those people to be willing to pay anything at all once they've already pirated and played it.
