The Baylor scandal has to do with the football team covering up a number of rapes of female students by its players.
There is little doubt that the players were only on campus to begin with due to the football program - they would not attend a university otherwise.

I studied in a southern university, tbqh there is nothing much to do for many folk and watching footbal is one of the commonly shared activity. There's nothing like it, no other hobby-sport whatsoever, I'm sure a southerner can explain it better than I ever can but college football is really a big part of the culture. College Football is about fundamentals and mismatches. Soccer, basketball, hockey have "plays" but they share a fluidity. There's much more improvisation. Baseball and cricket are about physically outlasting your opponent.
Think of the number of unique plays that can be called in football and, while an offensive guard may only have a very limited set of moves, some positions are extremely complicated and nuanced. With all the permutations you can see how a slight rub or advantageous route can lead to a large momentum shift.
Considering players skill set, some are more athletic, and despite the plays called will have an advantage which either enthuses you to see a member of your team to assert their dominance or causes anguish when you can't do shit.
