When the Roman Empire collapsed Christianity is what defended it from eastern barbarians. Then Christianity was responsible for making north and western Europe literate, build schools, unite their society, and as a result of this they had an explosion of scientific and cultural advancement. An immediate result of Christianity in Europe was europe becoming the most successful societies the world has ever seen. The success of western europe came immediately during and following the Christian Era and you can observe exactly why (literacy, large cohesive societies, and places of learning all due to the church.
