Hampshire College did something like that. Instead of a letter grade, you get a two page written evaluation from your professor at the end of the class. Students still have about a 89% job placement rate right out of college, and it's regarded as one of the top schools in the country (though not like a top ten or anything, more like top 100).

Example: Easily the smartest (IQ wise) guy in my freshman class was on academic probation after 2 semesters. He took and got the highest reported grade in the University in non-Euclidean geometry his first semester and flunked out of everything else.
