Although he has been vague, he's on the stance that his nomination for GOP candidate was to be self-funded, but now that he's in the primary, it is his duty as candidate to use all resources possible. Its not only for his benefit but also some sort of unifying symbolism to the whole ordeal.
The thing you must worry about is whether trump is making deals that benefit or hurt the US with those "establishment" politicians. He could still be playing them. He could be making the best decisions for the US as a whole. He could be plotting to make himself rich and ruin us. WE DON'T KNOW. But he's the best option available, at all. Thing is a wall costs a LOT less to maintain.
A Fence gets fucked up by the elements even in the timid Israeli weather. It's hard to say how well will one fare in the much more harsh American conditions. Perhaps the type of barrier could be adjusted per area.
Can't imagine a fence lasting in Hurricane lands.
Furthermore, a wall is much more effective in an Urban area as it's harder to destroy. In a place where you can't really keep people away from the fence reliably a wall is superior in any way (that's one of the reasons we went for a wall in the WB).
