While not a "megachurch", in the vein of your pic, i helped build houses in West Virginia back in high school for community service (McDowell county). The town was completely destitute, garbage strewn on everyone's lawn, no business to speak of, and we slept in the town's schools because they were abandoned. Meanwhile, we were forced to attend church each day (it was a mission type trip) and the church was decked out with a premier PA system/speakers, flat screen televisions, brand new furniture, etc

It's a conflicted matter. On one hand, Mega Churches are able to spread the word of God on a massive scale.
On the other, yes that money could go to others, but perhaps teaching people about God is all the charity that is needed.
My church is very small(Maybe 30 people), and we help those that are members of the church - we got in trouble in the past for helping outside members. Unfortunately not much can be done about that.
The land we worship on is donated to us, and unfortunately if a church tax was to come about it would affect all churches. Our church would close in a heartbeat as the profits we do make from tithe are generally going directly to the members of the church or keeping our church livable.
It would be and can be a shelter in times of trouble, but where we live we are probably in the safest part of the united states - if not the world.

I don't like the idea of mega churches, going to church shouldn't be a huge event with a microphone and a rich pastor. Small congregations led by humble people encourages more self reflection. I watched a recording of one of those American speakers and it was all about his own life and possessions, it was terrible.

If you tax the church, they then have the means to have DIRECT power in government affairs. As in they can LOBBY for certain positions instead of just advocating them.
