I'm guessing he couldn't have predicted the success it saw but Minecraft should not have progressed into the infdev phase before being reworked firstly in a better language and secondly in a more methodical manner (Notch's base code for minecraft is fucking spaghetti through and through and remains that way to this day). Because the game is basically built upon a foundation of spaghetti it's extremely limited performance-wise and not built to be modified to any great extend (without either great knowledge of the spaghetti or completely rebuilding the game).
