"anonymous" used to be just what we called ourselves on 4chan/chans, especially /b/. We would use "anon" almost like a pronoun to refer to channers. At that point "anon" was good for two things: getting a personal army (especially for raids and DDoS) and serving as a sort of shield for the cells of people who would communicate on private IRC channels and then announce what they were doing on the boards.
The issue is that 4chan is no longer a good place (let alone the best place) to whip up a mob, you can do that on twitter, facebook, anywhere.
