Live in generational home. It's a duplex. Grandparents lived here on other floor, I live with mom, other floor is rented out.
The rent where I live is completely out of control. People who live on their own (with roommates) are spending like 40%+ of their net income on rent. These people also have debt, bills, etc so how much do you really think they are contributing to their retirement? Less and less people are going to be able to retire which is already a big contributing factor to why college grads can't get good jobs - there is a bottleneck in employment opportunities.
A large contributing factor for why rent is so high right now is because the Chinese economy is volatile and untrustworthy so rich Chinese would rather get their money into something which is more stable by contrast such as American real estate. If you live anywhere near a good college, especially in a coastal city you probably have seen the housing market skyrocket over the last few years. Chinese will pay cash, pay 10%+ over asking, no home inspection, and close in a week. Joe and Jane Smith buying their first home with FHA loan and 10% down can not compete.
Add that in with the fact that interest rates on home loans are low right now and you get a lot of people looking to buy houses right now. Obviously that puts the seller in an advantageous position so if housing prices are going to be higher more people are going to have to rent, especially in urban areas. More renters = higher rent prices.
So lets put this all together.
Higher rents + less well paying jobs = more people living with their parents.
I'm not proud of the fact I live at home but I'd rather swallow my pride and save and extra $15,000 a year and be able to have financial security and help my future family when the time comes than have a shitshack and no savings just to appease society's flawed expectations.
