America has wanked itself dry of this warrior worship. It's a massive spillover of patriotism from when we last really needed soldiers to go and fight people - WWII.
Every war after that the government has had to prop of these worthless idiots with no sense of duty to go and fight for their interests.
The government wants to keep that number of warm bodies high so they recruit endlessly even though we have no real wars to fight and no real enemies who threaten us. So they shove this warrior worship down our throats so that we accept them as "better" than us for "serving their country."

This is actually what worries me most, lately. I've been studying hard and preparing myself physically to join our national officer school, to go infantry. I'm doing this because I've been passionate about our army since I was a child. I did more then sit on a boat, I was a Seabee which meant I wore fatigues and had combat training, I maintained the bases we were stationed at in high risk areas. But see, I crossed over to that rate. It was a calculated risk and the financial compensation was there. I was fired on twice and saw someone approach death but I knew before I joined that I could handle this level of trauma. Remember, the military is volunteered for. Don't feel bad for the veterans that have PTSD or off themself. I'm not saying I don't care for my "brothers in arms", I'm just saying at the end of the day they are grown men and they should be able to compose themselves, otherwise it is no longer my issue, get me?

In essence though, what I'm saying is the military is a necessary evil. Any damage and innocent lives lost are also part of making this machine run, whether we like it or not. It won't change. Now, with that said, it is also voluntary and provides financial compensation as well as opportunity and valuable training. Anybody who goes in and is dissatisfied, maimed/injured, killed, or has PTSD should not be emotionally coddled. I don't feel bad for them because they made a calculated decision to volunteer for a specific branch and job, knowing what they were going to get in to and getting paid for it. They should have prepared accordingly. That's about it.

If real PTSD occurs then it's not normal circumstance experiences. Real PTSD isn't about going through basic training, or getting in a fight. I'm talking about spending a year non-stop doing patrols, seeing ieds go off, and passing areas where driving bombs is a realistic possibility.

You do get compensation. You have an increased disability percentage as well as a bevy of medical benefits, including a VA paycheck and pension that is significant. You are most certainly payed to go through this. I was Navy and lived a comfy life, but went combat and faced danger because, among other things (opportunity, excitement) the pay warranted it. I'm not saying it doesn't suck that these people get hurt or get PTSD, but they shouldn't join if they don't want these things. The military realizes this, and this is why the pay is large and the benefits are numerous. It's danger pay and all that jazz, compensation for your work.

Alright, I have to start seriously disagreeing there. From my experience the pay was NOT worth it. I probably made about the same as I would at Mcdonald's or Wal-mart for what I did there, only there I got yelled at, had to do full weeks in the field, couldn't quit, hours and hours of useless waiting in the motorpool stretching our days as if I was some fucking manager but without manager pay. The free food chow only worked when we got the opportunity and time to make it there.
In Iraq I got hazard pay but still wasn't worth it especially when we used to tell eachother stories of what these Blackwater security guys were making on the civilian sector.
I am ex military. I did a little over three years because I was stop lossed in Iraq.
I don't hate the military. I am very proud of our military because I went. I'll tell you something though. I personally like to buy into the whole PTSD thing and try to talk about it and help people convince me I have it because when I start thinking of the thoughts I have of always feeling killing someone is the only acceptable way of handling a conflict and will always be the result of a confrontation I try to tell myself it's not normal. When I feel like all that's normal I will begin to accept it and I really don't want to think like that or I'll probably end up another statistic eventually on the news. Killing is almost guaranteed way to make things worse or continue the problem. Killing leaves nothing solved and creates more tension between the killer and the now affected people that were connected to the person killed pulling them into the battle. At this point things just got worse because the forces have grown on one side and most likely they will retaliate by at least one more death or perceiving that they will get attacked again will take out more with harder blow than the one given to them. It's a leapfrog affect. I know killing HAS to happen because some people just don't listen to reason but I think the first and most reasonable method of solving things should be a compromise. Obviously nobody can be totally happen but a bargain should happen to where the parties disputing can come up with a deal where one side sacrifices some things and gains some thing so that the current dispute causing so much of a disturbence is spread out to where there there is only little disturbances here and there but that are tolerable for both sides.

Usually higher branches and units of the military do that stuff and quite effectively. SOF like Green Berets which are not exclusive to USA usually befriend, train and plan with locals and psyops units quite effectively deal with this side of warfare.

She asked me once why I didn't feel like that when I was in the military and I told her that military bases for one were very secure and I trusted my fellow soldiers. I know we have bad people in the army but I never felt like they would kill me so I guess I didn't worry about it. Even in Iraq I felt secure on the base, I was with my unit on our base and we always had guard towers being monitored to protect us all and I guess that's why I never worried too much. I hate it out here though where everyone is out for themselves and there is no safe zone except your own house and even that is hardly ever secure with just a fucking door and a bunch of glass windows.
