Thing with the Navy is (excluding marines) there's very little physical work involved. At least with the army, going infantry/cav/anything except logistics and nursing, you aren't going to see women, besides a couple of CMTs. Same with the air force.
Navy is completely fucked for anything except subs, and I think they're starting to fuck that up now as well. Women couldn't pass the psych tests for subs before they started relaxing it to get pass a quota. You can imagine the amount of horseshit that's going to happen if a nuclear armed sub loses contact while submerged and there's a woman at the helm, sometimes it makes me glad the americans control our nuclear arsenal.

Not an aussie, but served in the light infantry in the brit army in the 80's (after Falklands and before the first gulf war).
First of all, don't join the army for a trade. Get a trade on civvie street and you'll be paid a lot more for a lot less. I'd only recommend joining the army if you plan on doing something you can't do elsewhere, like get paid to shoot people. Keep in mind that's not a very transferable skill so either do it for 20 years and retire or do it for your contract and get out before your knees give out.
Peace time you're going to be doing fuck all other than marches and drills. Every year you might be lucky enough to get shipped out to Africa or Norway to do some arctic/jungle training, etc.
Other than that you're going to be bored out of your fucking mind. Not sure how it is now but I know Brits have a lot of restrictions placed on them nowadays with leaving the base, you're basically either going to be drilling or sat playing the xbox during the week, weekends you get to go home to see your mam (if you're married when you join you get a flat on-base to move your family in)
I'd go to school or get another job until some raghead blows up a train station somewhere and we get dragged into another ground war, it's a waste joining the army during peace time, unless you're just a welfare queen.

At no point during the Cold War could the Soviets have "curb stomped" us. Many of their ICBMs were in terrible shape and would have either failed to launch, or suffered catastrophic failures during flight. The American technicians who inspected the Soviet launch facilities during the SALT treaties were shocked at how unprepared the Soviet Union was for nuclear war. In such a scenario, several NATO cities would have gotten nuked, (including many in the UK), but the Soviets would have most certainly gotten the shit end of the stick.
