I was reading about the abos the other day, on how they're one of the oldest races of peoples and how after living in Australia for 50,000 years, couldn't advance technologically or culturally in any way.
They blamed the isolation and hence the lack of other cultures to trade with, and they blamed the lack of any endemic crop in australia that would have allowed them to farm and build cities.
Now, look at a similar nomadic people like eskimos. Granted, they were able to trade with other tribes if they wanted to but they had no problem adapting to modern culture and thriving in areas with little to no resources with freezing temperatures all year round.
Even Maoris in New Zealand, which were more isolated, seem to have developed a much more advanced culture.

modern staple crops were not nearly as lucrative in their natural form 12,000 years ago. farming and breeding techniques led to efficient staples that could be relied on to feed growing populations, especially in the last 50 years with genetic manipulation. if you don't work for generations to cultivate it, you'll of course have nothing.
