The way I heard it was that the killing was likely accidental - they were torturing him to find the location of his money and drugs and one of the men fatally pistol-whipped him. This was also at the end of a several-day meth-fueled crime spree. Nobody really understood how fucked up meth was at the time and so the killing was blamed on muh homophobia.
