I'll explain it directly. I happen to know this because I'm a fag so I hang I know what fujoshi like. Also there are American fujoshi are who are much less sophisticated and pure than Japanese fujoshi.
Captain America is their favorite super hero. He is the prettiest and has a strong relationship with another male character. Thor is runner up on their list. There is something they do called "slashing" which is basically imagining two non-cannonical-gay characters as homos.
If you look at how Japanese media makes their stuff they design their shows with slashing in mind. They usually never have real gay characters because it would isolate too many fans, so the compromise is you have a lot of male-bonding and make all the male characters very pretty. Both groups get what they want. The normal people get a show about action and male bonding. Fujoshi and fags get a show about action and homosexuality. This is because both groups see what they want to see and the writers intentionally make it so you can interpret it either way (usually leaning far more towards it being not gay since 90% of the income is from hetrosexuals). This is the direction I expect Western media to go with.
SJW do not buy media, they hate everything, historically every time companies pander to them they get a lot of positive reception on tumblr but than their products do not sale. Fujoshi and gay men do and what's more they get really into a certain fandom and are much more likely to buy t-shirts, toys, and many things beyond just the DVD.

That's my view, if a character is gay and it comes up once or twice in the context of the story, it's just another detail and isn't bothersome, but then you have some characters where being gay is 70% of their character like Batwoman and every webcomic female ever.
Just like real life, people who aren't throwing their sexuality around (gay or straight) and are just normal people are great, I've known one or two and they're fine. It's the people who wake up in the morning and seem to ask themselves "how can I be louder today?" that irk people who come across as "anti-gay" I think.
