The problem lies in suffrage. Universal suffrage is bad: dumb people, uninformed people, foreigners, all kinds of niggers and freeloading commie gets the right to vote. Democracy worked for the liberalist State of late '800s until liberals convinced the West that everyone has to have the right to vote because

The right to vote in the liberalist State was a privilege granted to honest, educated, working, taxpaying citizens. All European nations prospered in the Belle Epoque thanks to this kind of voting system: the poor and the poorly educated could not vote.
Now, we need a voting system based on QI tests, income and genetic history (son of immigrants, you can't vote; son of a citizen and an immigrant, you may vote if you pass more tests). This is the only way to give legitimacy to democracy once again.

The only potential exception are countries like the USA, which are constitutional republics first and foremost, and democratic second. This allows for a unity around the Constitution. In other places where there is no such codified constitution, this cannot be said to be the case.

'Unity around the Constitution' does not exist. Constitutions can be amended even in the most conservative countries (like the USA); any politician can do that with enough support. Unity comes form culture and values, division comes from multiculturalism and diversity.

Most would find this absurd when dealing with the local football team for example. You wouldnt want a large group of people who know nothing about football or care enough to attend a game deciding who the coach will be or what rules to use.

Democracy doesn't work when decisions need to be made. Someone has power and there is always someone who must use that power. Now a republic is slightly different, but ultimately I'm at a point where I question the efficiency of a democratic republic. Corruption is unavoidable and checks and balances are able to be broken. Look at the state of my union. It is decrepit and crippled. Willfully ignorant masses are allowed input to the rule of law and history has always proven when the people have power they can't properly use it. Spreading misinformation is practically not a crime in my country anymore and such tactics with proven intent should hold the same penalty as treason.
Humans are creatures of self-interest. Democracy will never last as long as we want it to because a true democracy is and will always be plundered by those with power and converted in oligarchy and corporatocracies. This breeds aristocracies and then we are back to monarchy and dictatorship because humans are able to be herded as we are animals who regress into tribalism.
