Is he right? Do we not need fast Internet?

Liberal minister Christopher Pyne has defended his party's globally obsolete National Broadband Network saying Australians don't need fast internet.

The Minister for Innovation, Science and Industry faced fierce criticism of the NBN, which will produce some of the slowest internet speeds in the world, when he appeared on Q&A last night.

Australia is currently ranked 44th in the world for its connection speeds, below Ireland, Latvia and the Czech Republic.

In 2013, Labor's NBN promised download speeds of 1Gbps through an innovative fibre optics network linked directly to people's homes, on par with international standards.

However, the Coalition's version which won't be completed until 2020 and will only provide download speeds of 25Mbps, well below the global average.

Speaking in defence of the NBN, Mr Pyne said: "(Australians) simply didn't need the speeds that Labor was promising."

"You will be able to watch five full-length movies in the same household if you all want to at the same time.

"Which is a lot of movies. That's a lot of televisions."

His comments come after a series of AFP raids over leaked documents revealed cost blowouts for the Coalition's network.

The leaked documents highlighted the $800 million Optus network was "not fully fit for purpose" and could require more than 470,000 premises to be reconnected.

Labor shadow infrastructure and transport spokesman Anthony Albanese said "the NBN isn't about movies, it's about our economy and how it functions".

"Malcolm Turnbull's fraud-band is double the cost" and "half the speed of what he said it would be. And the delay is extraordinary," he said.

The coalition has also been criticised for pledging to use antiquated copper wiring to support the NBN.
>>
>>74934440
We need to be comparable with our trading partners. My biggest issue is with the lack of persistent upload speeds in a hfc/vdsl/whatever the fuck. Asynchronous uploads are the killer
>>
>>74934440
NBN is literally not needed for private residences

If you disagree, fuck off, you don't need to download your cuck porn any faster you fucking nerd.
>>
If fast internet is so vital to you move out of your mum's basement in the suburbs and move into a place you know has great internet speeds, there are already plenty of developments in every major city that has world class internet speeds. It is not the government's responsibility to shell out for your cuck porn habits and Australia's porn and pirating addiction.

Coalition are projected to get us back to a surplus by 2021, which is 5 years away and will save you having to pay of the debt through your tax in the future.

>>
>>74937577
The lifetime of good quality fibre could be centuries. I'm not saying it would be but could be.

I voted (single-issue) for NBN. But I've come to realise that Australian society is simply too retarded to implement it, no matter how much money is thrown. Money isn't the problem. Labor threw 38 billion at a mass of "capitalist" bureaucrat farts who sat around for 10 years drinking designer coffee and awarding themselves payrises. There was no vertical capacity build, no utility planning, just

The old collective mentality is gone in Australia and can't be brought back. Further awards of contract, etc is going to get gamed like the F35. If the government tried to do it internally bureaucrats would nowadays take over the role of self-entitling icecream-cash-ingesters and the result would be equivalent.

I'd probably vote for NBN again, my need is too strong. But it won't happen. Woe, woe, to the stupid country.

>You're wanting someone above the demands of the average person

Everybody I've met under the age of 60 approves of the NBN and everyone under the age of 50 wants faster internet. While this is anecdotal evidence, the honest belief by you that " You're wanting someone above the demands of the average person" is purely a fairytale you tell yourself at night.

Also what is it with the liberals. So often I hear them screaming about "eqaulity of opportunity, not equality of outcome" and then proceeds to tear down that same belief by gutting systems which can only be funded by a collective effort FOR that equality of opportunity. The NBN is that exact scenario.

Having it funded by everyone for everyone is equitable. Just because you can't see a use for a real internet network in Australia doesn't mean the rest of us should suffer for it. Tunnel vision.
>>
>>74939071
>5 movies!
I bet they are all 700mb files too.

These dumb cunts can't understand that in the future movie files are going to be 10x bigger so you will end up only being able to watch half of one, buffering all the way, not five.
>>
>>74938144
The government has signed brain-dead legislation making it illegal for them to own profitable competing entities. This can be got around with by mandating their parastatals to be nonprofit, but:

IMHO there's simply too much moral debasement in society now for nonprofits to function properly. Management inevitably decides it owns the place and destroys it with diversity recruiting, internal boondoggles, empire building, cronyism, etc. etc. You can see this happening to Australia post right now. Among other things I blame multiculturalism. No wogs should have been allowed in after 1945. Every increment in diversity brings a corresponding decrement in societal intelligence.

You fully admit annecdotal evidence, when there ARE polls.

Go look up the essential research polls, or the ones crickey pollbludger links to every few weeks. There are polls done on whether voters prioritise faster internet, smaller deficits, less taxes, lower spending, etc etc, and the NBN simply isn't highest priority.

Demand for it exists, yes. But because it's soft demand it will not be built to the desire of a heavy internet user. It will be built to the standard demanded by the swinging voter in the swinging electorate.

1 in 5 cs games, some cunt says "fuck, my sister's watching netflix", and his ping jumps to 200. We need to stay up to speed with the rest of the world, saying "why do we need fast internet" is like how african societies say "we don't need fancy civilisations, just have 7 kids a couple and 2 will survive". You're rejecting advancement because you don't see why it's necessary. Of course it's not necessary, just like how going to the moon wasn't necessary. Does that mean that you shouldn't do it?

If it in any way betters our society, why not do it? If this article is true, and labor's plan will be cheaper, then why not do it? (Regardless of your opinion on whether or not you need it, if it's cheaper, that means less taxes being wasted on something over expensive)

>Is he right? Do we not need fast Internet?

he is correct.

all the startups being pandered too want reduced taxes, reduced red tape, easier access to crowdfunding, easier access to 457s, entrepreneur visas, etc. not faster internet. startupaus' crossroads report never mentions internet access.

take up of the fastest internet packages is poor too. over 75% of nbn subscribers get the first two tiers of access, 12Mb and 25Mb.
>>

ran late, ran over budget, deployed to poor choice electorates and states first, couldn't get telstra to do an appropriate bid, forced contractors to bid twice to screw down their wages.

The ABC is not independent. They just have more people convinced that there is such a thing as objective significance and only their editors have the power to determine it, why? because others get proven biased more often. That just proves the ABC style of subtle bias is more effective at flying the independent flag longer since they are also running the campaign against the irredeemable sin of being caught as biased.

ABC IS MOST TRUSTED*
