I suggest you look up what the definition of "assault weapon" vs. assault rifle is, as well as what the words semiautomatic and intermediate caliber mean.
An AR-15 carbine is an excellent choice for personal defense because it is lightweight, reliable, easy to operate, less likely to overpenetrate through walls and the like, and more easily controlled. It also, as a class of firearm, rarely used in crime. And it is also in no way an assault rifle, definitely not "huge."

This belongs on /k/ but I have to disagree. An AR-15 is a rifle and therefore better suited to long range (300 meter or so) combat. It's too long/bulky for indoor defense, also loud as fuck probably want something better for indoors. I have a Mossberg 500 with 00 buck for HD. That thing is also loud AF but definitely a short range weapon that will drop a gorilla. I also have a meme gun, the Glock 17, that is highly maneuverable indoors. But all will overpenetrate, especially an AR. check theboxoftruth for experimental data.

Yeah, the stats seem way off. I live in Oakland, CA meaning if I had an AR it could hold 10 rounds tops. They don't look right with 10 round mags. It's sad.

M4 but stock and buffer tube assembly 54.99. Magpul MBUS rear sights are 54.99 and work tits with this build. Go down to your local gun store and get a stripped lower for about 50 bucks. You'll need to bring a valid state I'd for the form 4473 background check it takes about five minutes.
All you need is a small hammer some punches and an AR armorers wrench and some neddle nose pliers help. It takes less than 20 minutes to put a lower together if you are not a retard. Brownells and YouTube have a plethora of solid instructional videos. It's a bare bones AR, but I helped a buddy on a very tight budget build one and it ran like a champ. The best part about building your own is that you know exactly what you are getting and if you want to upgrade you get exactly what you want and nothing else.
