If you accept the premise that government has any business meddling in marriage, we go then towards the question of why they should care.
The obvious answer is the production of future tax payers and the stability of society. We are then led to the fact that homosexuals cannot produce children.
If a government is to incentivize marriage for the purposes of children through benefits including but certainly not limited to tax benefits, and homosexuals cannot produce children, then there is zero reason homosexuals should be able to get married. They are quite literally getting benefits for producing nothing. This is unjust.
A separate legal union should exist so as to address common homosexual concerns such as next-of-kin legal rights and hospital visits and such, but they should not get tax benefits for it.

Ok then why are infertile people allowed to get married? Why are old women who can no longer give birth allowed to get married? Why are couples who openly and definitively state they will not have kids allowed to get married? Why are men who have lost a testicle allowe to get married? Why are two individuals whose genetic background results in a high probability of a handicapped or otherwise terminally ill child allowed to get married?
If gay marriage was illegal, how would you enforce it? What would stop a couple bum buddies from taking their vows in secrecy and than becoming room mates? Do you want to make it illegal to have a samensex room mate or do you want to enforce policy that eliminates the possibility of secret vows via mass survailence?

An overwhelming majority of homosexual couples are capable of producing children, if not at the present time, then at a prior time, in which case they have produced children and "paid their due."
