Soulless apartment buildings and planned uniform communities...Where all houses look the same and have the same color. Please discuss.
>>

So we're discussing UN Agenda 21?
>>

Urban planner here.

Cities regulate too much. Also part of the problem is that developers build this shit to sell it to investors later. They don't care beyond 5 years out
>>
>>74900034
I meant to say, Americans are being herded like sheep into uniform, crowded Stalinesque apartment buildings and planned communities. I hardly think it's a coincidence. Meanwhile our best houses are being sold to Chinese millionaires for investment only.
>>
>>74900143
Hey urban planner why are all the new houses in Los Angeles ugly white stucco boxes.
>>
>>74900112
Yes agenda 21. No new desirable housing seems to be built any more. Either ugly communist buildings or planned communities or ugly modern box shaped houses. Something is afoot.
>>

Part of the idea behind the big window craze is to pander to the youth craze of being exposed. You know, the youth that likes to send pictures of each other taking their clothes off and masturbating in their free time.

More people stuck in 1 box - better = more work force for russia.

I think modern architecture is a step-up from the commie-block style buildings I see over here, but I would really like to see actual craft back in architecture where pleasant looking architectural features are common and impressive as they once were. Modern architecture really just feels like it is in the same vein as modern art where it is a "reaction" to traditionalist values that just looks like an excuse to put less time, money and effort into making a building yet also calling it revolutionary in design and anyone critical of it guilty of "not getting it".

Opinion polls have consistently shown that people prefer traditional architecture over modern architecture, so there is clearly a disconnect between the public and people who design the buildings they have to look at every day, so I think it's either that architects just want to be paid more for doing less or it's an "emporer's clothes" situation. I hope that one day sense will return to these fields so that aesthetically pleasing buildings and artwork can be built and celebrated rather than having to look to the work of my ancestors to not be embarrassed over the cultural output of my fellow contemporaries.

Exactly--it's simple economics. Land is scarce, parking uses land, so we should make it compete for land with everything else. If parking is really so valuable developers will supply it. Using gub'ment to force developers to include it makes no fucking sense, and it means we can't build cool ye olde neighborhoods that everyone loves.

As an aspiring hopeful architect, it's true that architect's taste generally differ greatly from the general public.

That being said it's common knowledge that the general public are fucking imbeciles. Modernism was actually pretty much on it's way out by the middle of the 20th century, and what you see now is more or less contemporary architecture.

Architect's taste may differ, and I postulate here, because "traditional" architecture is fucking boring. And I don't mean traditional in reference to the classic gabled roof type houses you have seen since colonial America, I mean traditional in shit-tier, low quality housing. Many architects really find houses from the early 20th century fun to look at because the craftsmanship and skill tended to be higher and emulated high quality construction. I'd wager you will find most architects can really appreciate a wide variety of styles, from colonial traditional to full on Mies Van der Rohe as long as the effort is evident.

What you see in the OP image is the urban equivalent of mass produced suburban housing. It's ironic you tout traditional architecture as some high and mighty pedestal, when in fact it's probably just as shit as what you see in the OP image.

In fact, I'd be willing to bet the OP image has a 1 - up on your traditional architecture in terms of function because it doesn't try to fake some style from yesteryear, and instead gets the job done pragmatically and efficiently. Build the shit quickly, get the people in, save space, and don't try to wear some old style like a superficial phony charade. Form follows function, newfriend.

To be fair, lots of sunlight is pretty tight, though it's pretty bad for insulation.
>>
>>74908395
At least in the UK most of the government-made housing is very high quality, it's bare-bones with exposed pipes and such but it is high quality. There are two main reasons for this:

>they're being built with government money. Who cares about the bottom line?
>shittily-made housing will just rack up massive repair bills later for the government. It's cheaper in the long run to make them work well.

On the other hand, once a construction company sells a property, it's no longer their concern. Hence they make it look good but skimp on materials to maximise profits.

No, fuck living under a tree. Fuck it. I had three big-ass oak trees around my childhood home they would shit so many oak leaves into our yard that it smothered our lawn come springtime and we'd have to constantly use a mower to suck it all up. Not to mention all the shit they drop on your car if you have to park under one. I don't care if it's aesthetically pleasing, I'd never buy a house surrounded by a shitload of trees.

The majority of architects are well aware of what style is necessary to appease the public. You will find the majority of them can appreciate any Renaissance or Classical architecture that many people enjoy.

But thanks for bringing up a lot of good points and not just throwing a list of popular buzzwords.

In the US it's incredibly difficult. Zoning, minimum parking rules, federal mortgage standards and many other regulations mean building small lower-quality housing that's profitable is essentially impossible. Developers sensibly build high-end stuff. Liberal cucks force more laws and regulations to force more housing for poor folk, making the problem worse.
>>
>>74908203
That's great and all, but one of a buildings functions is to look good and if people don't think it looks good, then it isn't doing part of its job.

I don't doubt that most of the "traditional" buildings were just shitty buildings that were knocked together and destroyed without anyone really caring, and architecture has gotten better recently than the concrete commie-blocks you can see all over this country, but I'm more talking about nice architectural features that seem to be neglected in modern buildings, even simple stuff like patterned brickwork or architectural reliefs I rarely see, if mostly becasue the exterior of everything is just made out of glass and steel, which is probably cheaper but it is just so boring to look at and leaves no apparent craftsmanship or skill to behold. Compare stuff like town halls built over 100 years ago to ones built recently and you can see the contrast to how the newer ones are just less pleasant to look at and are just less impressive.

As you can probably tell, I'm not an architect and I don't doubt that you know more about architecture than me (unless you really fucked up in your studies), so you could really spin me a story about whatever you wanted of how the public "just don't get it" or how material costs and planning permissions mean that nothing "traditional" will ever get built again and call it a night but to me it just seems like there just isn't a whole lot of effort being made into making buildings that would inspire people anymore.

I am talking about fucking trashbag looking plastic hanging loose in the walls between the brick facade and the metal framing - sometimes no fucking sheathing at all in huge commercial construction.

Sounds exactly like what is happening here. We have a lot of social housing amd you have to be registered at least 5 years in most places to have a chance at one, in Amsterdam it's 15 years. Unless you are a refugee that has never payed into the system then you get a house immediately. The system is heavily subsidized so everybody is taking advantage of that as well and costing the gov billions.

>>

We have the same type of stuff…. not huge clusters like Russia, but similar 60's/70's style.

They can actually be quite nice inside if properly renovated/maintaned the build quality is probably better than the new glass/spandrel condos you see now days,

The reason They look so bleak in Russia is they just don't seem to place a premium on landscaping, greenery or beautificatin of any kind. It doesn't cost too much to plant a garden, lay some sod, maintain some level of upkeep.

Tennants demand a certain level of upkeep in some countries, they will actually volunteer to do things to make their own environment more appealing.

I don't think Russia cares about these type of things.

The type and function of a building are generally built for demand. You will find urban boxes in hip, new end neighborhoods in city cores, and suburban cookie cutter houses in the suburbs of course. I do agree that the current trend of architecture is fairly low quality whatever style you look at, but to be fair, not every building is supposed to be a work of art and if you have people waiting in lines to get into housing that takes too long or is too expensive to be constructed, you're missing the highest priority of a building.

I can definitely understand why modern architecture is off putting. I think it was more or less a result of the fast paced life and how we look at buildings. People used to travel across the globe to see European gothic cathedrals and would spend a great amount of time admiring the form work and attention to detail. As life got faster paced, it was less about the details and more so about the form and massing of a building.

For example, Frank Lloyd Wright designed his Robie House in regards to a person driving by in the newly invented automobile, in contrast to people walking by slowly. As you drove by, you admired the long axis, the repeating ornamentation, the form, the stuff you would notice by driving in a car. You wouldn't really notice the details flying by at 30 MPH and he took that into account. This is just stuff I'm regurgitating from my studies as you can tell.

Also, you are right that a lot of modern architecture in the first half of the 20th century was mostly the result of architects getting really tired of designing the symmetrical box that dominated the majority of human history. Playing with the forms, asymmetrical massing, how you approached the exterior, respect to the human occupying inside it were all things taken that mixed it up.

The water that's keeping that grass alive is coming from underground aquifers that will be completely dry if current use continues.

>>
>>74910400

Really buildings are like cheap clothing now… basically they are disposable.

It's much cheaper to just demolish a cheap building every few decades and put up a new one than have something more impressive and permanent.

A lot of old buildings are a burden, because they are difficult to repair and heat, and they can't be arranged in a modular way to suit different purposes.

My dads church was recently decommissioned and the congregation sold it for a firesale price, because it is just very hard to re-purpose.

In big cities they can make a buck turning them into condos, but in a smaller town it's not feesable. These old structures either need volunteers to maintain them, or they need to be demolished. (which is also expensive for a large sturdy, stone building)

Two reasons as I see it.
1. It's quick and easy to build.

2. As the neighbourhood ages, each owner will modify the home bit by bit. Adding value to the home, and making the area more distinct.

All you have to do is look at any area that started out that way 50-75 years ago. They evolve from being boring cookiecutter into something that is almost kinda nice.

This sort of new housing is different from similar-looking stuff from 50-75 years ago because it's all one building, with one owner. This is a far less economically resilient setup, because that sort of incremental improvement is much more difficult compared to old-school small buildings, where the failure of one doesn't fuck everything up. I'd say most of these buildings will never look as good as they do now, which isn't really true of many mixed-use buildings from a while back.

Zoning, federal housing finance rules, parking requirements, and building regulations all prevent the sort of small mixed-use buildings from being built, so we see creepy cheap knockoffs everywhere.
