Then they said they wanted to make it more "thrilling". What kind of state department does that for fucks sake?
All of a sudden VdB votes started to rise - against the trend of all hours before.
Then there were vote cout "problems" so it took them 1 1/2 hours to finally officially come up with the result.
In the news they said that there were mistakes and talked about ~7000 votes.
Now we have places with more than 100% participation.

That's not quite how it works. Absentee ballots (the better translation would be postal ballots) are requested usually by the following groups of people:
1) those who live abroad
2) those that live in Austria but are too far away from a polling station and can't be bothered spending half a way to travel to the next one
3) those who might be away for the weekend of the election, such as either on vacation, spending weekends away from where they are registered, are on business travel
The postal ballot does not have to be mailed in, you can just take the slip and vote in ANY polling station in the country. Just a bit more convenient. The counting procedure for postal ballots is more rigorous than for normal votes.
There is nothing magical about Hofer getting disproportionately less votes from the postal ballots, as those requesting postal ballots have always been favouring the left. Not just this time.
