From what I know, it's region that no one would want if it wasn't for geopolitical reasons. It's so poor that you have to pump millions into it just so it doesn't collapse, but people will pay the price.
I assume it's a good buffer zone or has important ports or maybe pipelines could go over it, not informed enough.
Also I think Russians were there first and many of the people actually prefer to be Russian, and Russia was provoked by NATO activities, but it was still illegal and wrong to take it; but no one cares because EU is weak?
Not a huge fan of Ukraine because you'll just be another wasteland living off our money just because the US want another cozy place for rocket shields. I'd rather Russia has to deal with that.

Russia won the territory in a war with Turkey in the 1700s or 1800s. Was all Russian up until Khrushchev re-assigned it to the Ukrainian SSR (of course without the USSR collapsing in mind). Then it was illegally given to Ukraine, Russia illegally took it back and it also had autonomous status for several years already.
It's back to its rightful country now.

It used to a good location with decent beaches for Ukrainans to go to the seaside for a not-to-expensive black sea holiday without going abroad.
It was taken over by Putin's forces in a semi-staged referendum (I think there was definitely pressureby non-uniformed cunts to sway the voters to vote for "independence" but I doubt they would have voted to stay)
The reason for the takeover would be to increase the lease on the naval base in Sevastopol (or Simferopol, I'm not sure since I always get those 2 mixed up, they sound very similar), as that runs out in 2020.

I saw old news broadcasts from our national tv website (yle) and according to them Crimean people wanted to either belong to Russia or to be independent during 90's several times. I do not think any politicians in the west realized how ruthless Russian politicians are when it comes to geopolitics and thus they easily got Crimea for themselves (in my opinion western politicians lack realism and look at the world trough ideology). I see this as continuation for the Yugoslavian war in political sense, USA made new rules with their actions regarding Kosovo and Russia just used the same tactic.

According to ukrainians a part of ukrain with ukrainian inhabitants. According to russians and russian separatists in crimea should be part of russia with a primarily russian population. Strategically I believe it's important for its ice-free harbors, which is probably why russia wants it (as well as syria). That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge on the subject.
