We all have our roles within the platoon depending on seniority assigned to us by our company command staff. For instance the following is how duties are delegated:
Senior Drill Instructor (black glossy belt identifier): plays the roles of daddy to the platoon and is the one that looks out and takes care of you. Gives you "rewards" for good things performed such as winning drill, taking the PT trophy, winning pugil sticks, or punishes you for fucking up. A lot of it is bs and is scripted but hes the senior and runs the other hats in the platoon.
J-hat/Junior hat: teaches you close order drill
Prac hat: teaches you military history knowledge, ethics, morality etc. Plays the teacher role
Kill hat: the lowest on the totem pole. Typically the newest guy to the company who has not yet learned anything on how to run a platoon. His role is to physically fuck up recruits through physical incentive training and do the bitch work the other hats cant do. This guy is one of the hardest working hats during any training cycle and runs off pure hate, no sleep, nicotine, and a desire to hurt recruits for their stupidity.
These are the general roles but you can adapt them to fill in others if your team requires it.

2nd phase we, the platoon assigned ones, are the ones who teach them the very basics of field skills. There are assigned weapon marksmanship instructors that are outside of our training command that they go to learn from. When they are on the rifle range learning from them we actually cannot fuck with them or stresss them out. In Vietnam, the amount of manpower called up by the draft was so far in excess of what was actually needed to shitstomp the VC and the NVA that anyone who had any connections whatsoever--or any skills--could avoid actual fighting for the entire war. And they did.
The grunts sent into 'nam were bottom of the barrel scrubs whose main job was getting shot so that their bodies could point towards targets to hit with air support. The Australians for some reason felt that sending real soldiers into Vietnam would actually help. You don't need a scalpel to fight these people, you just need a hammer and willpower.
And if you'll recall, we DID demolish the VC, and cripple the NVA. We had a treaty signed and cemented with both sides that would have sealed the deal forever if it weren't for the Liberals pulling us out at the last second. Humiliating, yes, but not a realistic indictment of the strategy, because the strategy worked, and it worked for a bargain price of 60,000 losers.

I mean I can't understand a fucking word of it.
