You're relatively safe and out of harms way while also getting to travel and see the world instead of going on deployment to Iraq and occasionally being housed on a base in Nebraska. I tried to get into Venture Scouts and Sea Scouts after I turned 18, since they let you stay up to 21. Both local troops sucked. The Venture troop was run by a bunch of girls, and they had poor communication and leadership. The Sea Scouts had almost no members, then went down to NO other active members by the time I left.

Getting an eagle now days is not like it was in the past. My scoutmaster was a old guy who fought in WW2 and korea and has done scouting for about 60 years. According to him the troops are now mass producing eagles. It used to be quite an honor to get to an eagle and if you look what the eagles back then looked like and compared them to what we have now it is quite sad. Too many fatass kids and kids who really shouldn't have been in scouting and are there just because it was free babysitting for their lard asses. I remember when women started to become common in troops. My scoutmaster didn't like that at all and said that that was the beginning of the end of what scouting meant. And then the gays were allowed in and that was the last straw.

Honestly I agree. My brother is still a boyscout in my old troop. Sometimes I stop by the meetings, and... It's really changed. There's so many moms involved, mommying their kids. I always saw Scouting as an opportunity to get away from your mom/wife, and go have guy time in the woods. Now it feels like moms send their reluctant boys there to churn out Eagles. By the time I got my Eagle Scout award, most of my troop was so far gone to the left it wasnt even funny. Unfortunately, when the BSA decided to let gays in, the (based) Church we met up in questioned whether to let us keep meeting up there. It was a shame really, it was a good place and had plenty of tools and land to our disposal. I left for Basic Training after that, so I dont know how the unit figured out what to do
