If you give everything for free people will not work. If you take away from the productive citizens to give handouts to the lazy people will not work. If you regulate prices and force companies to sell at a loss, they will simply refuse to produce anymore.
Socialism fails because it interferes with the price system and resource alocation, and money stops going to what is more efficient.
Social democracy (what you seem to be alluding in your post) works better than socialism but it also fails in the long run because the high tax rates create too much of a burden on the economy.
Equality of opportunity should be the goal, not forced equality of outcome.

The problem with socialism is that it gives the state jurisdiction over things only citizens can do. Sure, we should live in a society where people are willing to share what they have for the good of others, but when most people inevitably hoard resources for themselves, government intervention can only solve the problem in the short term by forcefully redistributing them. You can't stop that person from resenting the society in return and further rebelling against it.
At its core, this is more a cultural problem than an economic one. It would probably be a more effective approach for socialists to find ways to enstill altruistic values in the world's youth today rather than trying to reverse their deep-embedded, self-centric beliefs in the future.
